Brown endures at
Oregon JlR
By Russ Cazier

PO RTLAND, O R, JUNE 20
The Oregon Mo torcycle Road
Racing Associa tion demons trated its ma turity by 'conducting
a successfu l race at Portland
Interna tional Raceway on the
sa me day that the Washing to n cl ub
was raci ng 150 miles away.
The nearly total absence of the
barbarians fro m the North must have
contri buted to gentlemanly conduct,
as th ere were few crashes, despite
fierce competition in most races.
G ene Bro wn established a record of
some sort by racing in every h ea t of a
two-round, seven -race forma t. Bro wn
posted two firsts (in Formu la T wo
a nd 850cc Ca fe), a second, a third,
two fifths and a sixth for his efforts
an d moved in to a comman ding lead
for season points and a re pe a t of last
year' s win of the Oregon n u m ber one
p la te.
Brown , who lists his age as between
25 and 40, had few opportu nities to
coast on the track. Despite only th ree
en tries}n Formu la Two, Brown, Do ug
Guthrie and Steve Dawley stayed bikeleng ths apart in both heats. Brown
won tha t class when Guth rie, who
had won th e first heat, crash ed while
in the lead in the second heat. "Temporary insanity," said Guth rie.
Don Horn made Brown wo rk for
second pl ace in 430cc Prod uction,
and Dawley pressed h im again in
Formu la One. The p henomenal part
of " Iron Man " Bro wn 's performance
was that h e was clearly faster in the
second round of heats.
The P inkstaffs had a superb racing
day. Howard won Open Single GP
on his Garner Yamaha-sp o nsored
th um pe r, in addition to ge tting in to
the track free because he was accompanied by h is son, Keith . I t was
Father's Da y, you know.
Keith P inksta ff carried th e Whee lsport colors to wins in Open P rod u ction and Form u la One, and rode perha ps his best race ever when h e came
in second about two feet beh ind Dan
Bennett in O p en Cafe. Pinkstaff,
pe rha p s feari n g a protest for a lack of
a charging system on the Da n Freeman/Wheelsp ort Kawasaki superbike, ran hi s stock Suzuki G SI IOOin
Open Cafe. Da n Bennett, th e young
AMA dirt racing phenomenon, staved
off a las t turn , last lap, second heat
pa ss by Pinkstaff for me Open Cafe
wi n. " I though t I had h im for a
second th ere," Pinkstaff sai d. "I don't
th in k he was expecting th e pass. I
outbraked h im into turn nine a nd go t
a wheel past on the outside. Unfortuna tely, we were still 30 or 40 feet
fro m the fla g , and when we bo th go t .•
back on the gas, he j ust shot away
from me. Danny is learnin g fast. "

The 250cc Novice main was due for
a restart when Ch ris Carter went
down in turn three while leading.
The restart had Mark Kill in gswort h
take the lea d and h ol d on to the
checkered fla g while being pressured
in the final laps by Dea n Clark. Kil lingsworth got a well-deserved first
place; he 's been ou t here a while trying to put it all togeth er.
In the 250cc j unior round, Larry
Staggs got to start from his favorite
position - the penalty line! Mike
Cagle took the lead from the green
and held it to the finish. Meanwhile,
Walt Bevens, in his first Junior race,
made his way up through the traffic
to take charge of second. Staggs,
slightly upset a bout starting on the
penal ty line, push ed hard all the way
for a th ird, al mos t n ipp in g Bevens at
the finish whe n Bevens lost a chain
just before the checkered.
The 250cc Expert s were up for a
restart when Dave Walden and Tim
Skov tangled on me front straight
and went down hard. Neither rider
restarted. O n the restart, Bill Rogers
got me jump for the lead but promptly
laid it down, letting Ra ndy Blankenship take over for one la p , since Dave
Ryan had ot her ideas. Ryan opened
up a comman ding lead while Da le
Hansen put the pressure on Blankenshi p an d sli pped by for a second position. They finished in that order. •
