Mini Intermediate Gold Cup series leader Mik e Crowell took another fir st overall with a perfect I-I, placing on his Crowell Auto Parts/DG Yamaha. Mind you, no one was seriously hurt, but mo re than a few newcomers wondered why tech inspectors were allowing ambulances to run in the heats. The Denzler brothers made assaults on combined 450 and 600cc Production. Gus (Yam Vision) won 600, pressed by Scott Moon (KZS50) and new rider Ken Maeda (G Pz550). H eat two quickly turne d hotter. Zooming up left hand turn seven , beh ind Maeda and Dave Roosevelt (Lynnwood Yam 550 Seca), Gus ma y h a ve leaned his Vis io n too far. Roosevelt recalls a brake lever brushing h is leathers, then G us was down on the ins ide, ready for a trip to th e X-ray man. With his bro the r's o ld 1977 RD 400, he clipped off a pair of back-to-bac k th irds, behind Larry Buck (H igh land Hon ) and Ri ch ard Burnham in the " new wave " of 450cc Production. H ave you ever seen an awesome Honda Hawk? Marty W ilkison's totally cafe'd Nighthawk blasted combined 450 and 600cc Mod Prod for the 450 win. At the end of heat two he actually led the closest rider by 1000 feet. Dick Burnham and Larry Buck followed him for more second and third place gold. Dick Wascher's frames show up all over. Steve Giblin won Open GP Single on e coupled with TT500 power. Eldon Warren 's BSA Victor might have triumphed, were it not for a heat one DNF. As it happened, Ralph javins' MEl Services Yamaha 125 took second overall, John Doyle 's H onda third. The AMA Sem i-pr o licensee Claude E. Unt il th e las t lap of the second ra ce, Sid Collier looked like he had thi rd p lace money in the bag. Bu t, after waiting so long, Mike Kenyon crept past at the flag for that all important second heat finish. Brian Sutton brought some interest to Superbike.
