e r n Nevada- Sout h e r n Callforn l a -Arl zo n a -Southe r n Nevada , of th e Pro riders agreed to combine the classes and race for one purse. Once the gate dropped, most of the first m oto finishi n g o rde r was established . Todd Peterson took the lead in the first turn on h is 250 a nd kept a co nsta nt two to three-second lead o ver Tracy Meeks ' 125 the entire ti me. Open rider Brian Fr y began in th ird and held off all challengers. As a matter of fact, there were only two posi tion changes th e entire rnoto. On the first la p , R ick Maki went off the track in th e stutterburnps, and Chris Heinrich slipped by. Then o n the six th la p, H ei nrich came off th e TT ju m p side ways, and his bike went into th e chain-lin k fence by th e mudhole. While Heinrich cou nted his ble ssings and continued in the race, he did los e two spots. In the second rnoto, the -ho leshot wen t to Meek s. Tracy th en ke p t a sa fe lea d o ver Peterso n who di d n't get cl ose to th e leader except on the last la p whe n he closed th e gap fro m five seco nds to one. Fr y, who finished th ird th e first time around, ta ng led wi th Maki off the big jump on the sta rt lap and bro ke a wheel. H ei nrich ended up th ird in the second moto. Meeks had th e overall win with hi s 2-1 to Peterson 's 1-2. The most impressive ri de of the week ca me from Stev e Wes t in the I25cc Intermediate ranks. Steve q uickly p u t his Kaw asa ki in front of h is class a nd then set out to pass most of the 250s before i t was over. As a ma tter o f fact, even starting from the seco nd ro w, he would ha ve had a 3-2 in th e 250cc.class. West was finding ro o m to pass where no o ne else was daring to make a move all night, esp ecially th ro ug h th e newer sections of the track. R yan R o bert s kept h im self cl ose most o f the race, but in the seco nd rnoto he lost a lo t o f ti me when he ta n gled with another bike in m id-air over the tabletop. West had the overall with h is I- I, a nd Robert s fo llo wed with his 2-2. Results 60 BEG: 1. Joey W in st on (Yam). 60 INT: 1. Bobby Dlug os (Yam ); 2. Ma tt Fost er (Yam). 60 EX: 1. Dahlgren, Smith steal CRC Outlaw GP By Terry Rezek SAN BERN AR DI NO , CA, J U N E 13 Arroyo wa s really coo kin g today. X~~ par k ~'!~ .~~t P$. us ed for the CRC O u tlaw Grand Prix. This race had a double a p pea l. It was the last grand prix before the summer break and a q ual ifier for the a ma teu r supercross to be he ld in t.he L.A. Coliseum o n J ul y 18. The first race of the day co mbi ned th e Minis and th e 125s, with th e 125cc Am a teurs off first. G ene El zenberger was the first of them , jumping to an immediate lead with Jeff Dahlgren a nd James Domay for shadows. He opened up a slight lead over Tim Walker who moved up to second on lap two with Da hlgren back to third. On laps three a nd four, Elzenberg er contine d to stretch h is lead, and Dahl~reri, Domay and Wa lker were play109 swaps behind him. Now back in second, Da hl gren beca me very aggressive , sensing, perhaps, that Elzenberger was tiring. The gap was down to less than 10 seconds when Elzen berger slipped in an off-camber downhill turn and went down hard. He was up quickly but not befo re Dahlgren dashed by. Apparently shaken by the crash, Elzenberger co u ld not recover his former momentum , and Walker moved up and past before the end of the race to take second behind Dahlgren , leaving E lzenberger in third. The Pros and Expert s were next up with many fami liar faces on the line. Troy Smith was the first of those faces off the lin e, grabbing a nice holeshot to lead Mark Ba rn es, brother Quinton Smith and Brad McLeod through the firs t lap. Befo re that first lap was over, McLeod got around Q . Smith to run thi rd into la p two. A lap or so later, Barnes overshot the same off-camber turn th a t got Elzenberger in the previous race. Before he could clamber back o n to th e track, McLeod and Q. Smith both sl ipped by. Now in seco nd, McLeod set out after T. Smith and a lmost caught him napping a bout 15 minutes into the race. H e was within th ree seconds of Smith whe n Sm ith rea lized he was there and we nt back to warp speed. From that point o n, it was cat and mouse with T roy Smith sca m pering over the lin e just a head of McLeod. Meanwh ile , brother Q u into n wa s havin g problems. H is shock reservo ir had come loose and was flo p p ing aroun d. O bviously that co ul dn 't la st , a nd it d idn 't. When th e reservoir broke off, Smith tried to hold ou t but was unable to maintain p ositio n o n a bike th a t no w han dl ed like an o ld DT- l. H e pogoed around unti l the finish, a nd th a t in itself deserved some kind of award. • HI-PERFORMANCE MOTORCYCLE LUBRIC ANTS DESIGNED FOR TODAY'S RACI NG MOTORCYCLES 'HI-POI NT 2 CYCLE .. .
