Johnson, Alsobrook big & little of if af CMC AscofTT By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CA, JUNE 17 A rather dismal showing of riders tonight for the Continental Moto-sport Club's TT scrambles at Ascot made Stu Peters decid e he 'd made the correct decision . . ~ it's going to be short track from now on. In the lightweight division, the second race was the best. On assorted sizes of machinery from mini to 125s Brian and SCOll Alsobrook and Kur- tis Cushman swapped the lead spaces around. Brian, on a mini, had won the first round, and he started off with the lead for a while in the second, but Kurtis was wired up and took over , riding very hard to keep his first place. Those "kids" can sure get with the program. . All the 250s ran together. Theonly Pro, Mike Kirby , took home his share of the payback although in the overall standings he was hampered by a header pipe that kept coming adrift. The Veterans were in the same race , too (so you can see what kind of a night it was) , and George Huebner had the handle on second until Orlando Lamboy went all around the outside in turns one-two and took it away from -hirn in the overall race . Orlando also steamed off with the lead in the second race after Kirby 's pipe came loose, putting an end to a very interesting dice . Alwa ys in there was Veteran Jerry Peters on a BSA (yes, really), and he beat OUI two other riders in his clas s on much more recent machinery. The 500cc Juniors had the biggest class . It was close racing between Dale Hopkins, David Dungery and Mike Hixson. In the first race, they were coming through the turns looking at each other, along with Steve Honeycutt who had problems in th e second race. Tom Topping found himself up with the front-runners and came in third after a couple of th e others landed on the ground by overdoing it in the tight stuff, and it was Dale Hopkins with two straight wins overall. All th e Opens and the 500cc Intermediates ran together, and Jeff Johnson just tore them up, taking off with two straight wins. Bill Fulton and Orlando Lamboy argued over second place while John Sperry, Jimmy Rosa and Nigel Gale switched around over the j urn p. Noone was going to catch Johnson , though; he went along just as hard as if he were running a National .. . nice to see. Results MI NI J R: ·1. Brian Alsobrook (Hon); 2. Racin g conditions at O range County International Raceway tonight turned out to be just about the tou ghest ever encountered at the popular night track. While most of the track was well watered, a breakdown of the water truck in the late afternoon caused one section of the track to be left dry. Then halfway through the first rnoto, a light but steady mist began to fall, making some parts of the track slick as well as making goggles just about useless. But, crashing bikes were the exception, not the rule, as the riders adapted quickly to the changing conditions. T he turnout in the Pro ranks was off on this graduation evening so all
