Noyce had a very p oor start, roundin g the first lap in 13th position. T h e tall U K Honda rider th en p roceeded to pick off riders one by on e, finall y making a las t lap ch arge to try a nd pass Hudson and Semics. Bu t th e two stayed in position to th e fin ish a nd no more than two seconds separ- : a ted the three at the fin ish line. Noyce was still bo th ered by a knee in j ury sustained in the USG P at Carl sbad. Brad Lackey was happy wit h h is first moto win , but wanted more o f the same. "After I fell on tha t uphill , it was all a question of ma kin g up time. My strategy for the second mo ta : Do n' t fall ," he concluded em p ha ticall y. Pederson finis hed sixth a nd French cha m p Patrick Fura bro ught h is 1983 model-H usky in for sevent h . They 'w ere the last riders on the sa me lap as Lackey. Earlier in the day, Bad Brad had q ualified his RN82 Suzuk i firs t, ahead of teammate Vromans' nea rly identical mount. He was determined to put tha t speed advantage to good use. At the start of the second mota , it was Vromans leadin g the pack into tu rn one with Lackey, Hudson, Semics and Noy ce close behind. Two laps lat er, Vromans was holdin g off Lackey while Noy ce p assed Sem ics for third , followed by Hudson, Pederson, Ca n adia n Yam aha rider Terry H ofoss and Fura. While Lackey was settin g up 'to chase Vrornans, Noyce was having the same tholleh l ~hout h im . The smoo th riding English man was wi th in a few bikelengths of Lackey when a passing attempt led h im to fall , on the six th lap. H e go t bac k on board and on course but Lackey was now long gone and bot h Hudson and Semics had passed h im . Noyce repassed Semics on lap 13 and Hudson six laps later. Semics did the same on lap 20 and was hounding Noyce when he got a board signal not to pass Noyce, th e team's main asset in the title chase now. Sem ics o bliged, the signal being in tune with an agreement th e American rider has with Honda for the series. But the major u pset of th e weekend had already hi t th e crowd, which was 10,000 for th e two days. Out on the course, at th e bottom of a hill he had twice tried to escalate, was Brad Lackey, motionless, furio usly trying to bring his engin e back to li fe. " It was no use ," he later said. " T he rear shock had broken three laps before a nd I had first ri dden with a rigid rear end on fu ll ext ensio n and then o n a spring only, but it was over when the shock blocked the air intake to the engine. I cou ld never have fixed it." After lo ng minutes, Lackey pitched the bi ke sideways a n d walked back to the pits, while Vroma ns was heading for a first p lace fin ish and 15 valuable title points. . The two Suzuki riders sa y that there is n o wo rd from Suzuki that either one should give to the other, and both feel that th e three remaining rounds will be a fig h t to the finish, with only 10 points se parating Lackey in first and Vromans. - Results 1.
