leader Brad L ackey had a golden opportunity
in the Canadian G P to stretch ou t his lead
with o nl y three rou n ds remain.ing in the 500cc World Champ io nship MX Series. In stead,
he saw vet ano th er Belaian chal-

lenge him for his long-sought title,
this time Suzuki teammate Andre
Vromans.
In the first40-min ute pi us two laps
rnoto, Lackey had paced himself
beautifully. Desp ite a fall in a sharp
uphill section. Lackey had passed
race-long leader Vromans halfway
into the 23rd and last lap on the wide
and well -groomed 1.2 mile track.
Lackey 's surge to the front had
taken Vromans off guard. The Belgian rode nervously in the closing
laps. while Lackey. charging behind
him. was' chopping almost two
seconds a la p off what amounted to a
16 second advantage for Vromans.

circuit this year, Gary Semics, was
cruising ever so smoothly in third
place. Sernics, riding the 1981 works
.H o nda he first tried o u t in the Italian
G P. had taken a superb start. leadi ng
Vromans, Lackey, and Canadian
champ Ross Pederson, who was on a
stock Suzuki RM465. around the first
corner.
Halfway into the first lap. Vromans got by Semics for the lead. Semics the n resisted Lackey until the
third lap and then put himself on
cruise in third, a position where he
would be challenged only in the very
closing seconds in this first rnoto. At
that point. defending 250cc World
Ch a m p io n . Britishman Nei l Hudson
was chasing him around the course.
