Unidentified Utah motocrossers mix it up in the powder. Holman, Gramley head Austin night MX By Donald Mueller AUSTIN, TX, JUNE 26 Racers from Texas, Mexico and Louisiana convened tonight at Austin's MotoSport Raceway to vie for slots in the AMA 42. "'.,.a . National Amateur and Youth Motocross Championship. This Regional Championship Qualifier, sponsored by Kawasaki, was for the Youth, Women and ' Senior Divisions. Between races strangers to the area discovered the joys of indigenous Texas plant life, like watermelon and bull nettle. The first set of motos was run as 13-minute-plus-one-lap heats. But with 16 classes being run in one day, the word came down from on high that the second set would be run by laps. It seems the track owners did not want to increase overhead by providing certain scorekeepers, timekeepers and reporters with a rubber· ' 1In ed sconng tower. Kathy Holman took the holeshot in the first I1;lOtO of the Women's and IOOcc classes, the only combined classes of the day. She led the race on her Honda until the last lap when she was finally passed by Billy Richard and Mark Cochran, both riding IOOcc Yamahas. Cochran and Richard had been trading positions throughout the race, but Richard was in front when the checkered flag came down. 'S Yama ha rider P atu ummera11 took an the early lead in the second moto, followed by Holman, Vicki Semar on a Honda and Richard. Holman went down at the bottom of the west hill and lost several positions trying to restart. Holman was able to work her way back up to fourth - second in her class behind Semar - to take first overa 11 . Cochran moved up steadily throughout the race, finally to lead Richard at the checkered. Senior class holeshot went to Steve b h . kl 1 C oreeon hi M' IS aico, ut e quic y lost the lead to Darius Gramley's Kaw, asaki and second to Kenny Butler's Yamaha. By the end of the lap, David Hubbard had moved into second. Back in fourth Corlee fell, losing a position, while Hubbard took and held the lead on his Honda. Hubbard took the holeshotin the second moto and led the pack until 1 th east 1ap, w h en Gramley was able to get around him. Butler came ,in , third.i thp.rafeantf.th·rd ove .rall. . Both ride Yamahas. ' The afternoon sun drove several multitudes to the concession stand and the river through the dandruff of cottonwood trees, Others escaped the ' burning rays by strolling through the nose-deep grass burrs. , Winners in the qualifier will be . invited to the National Championship at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch near Nashville, TN. The National ' will takeplace August 4-7 on a track ' constructed especially for the event. Riders.who find the fortitude to leave Texas - some riders have threatened to get injured next month so they won't have to go - will check in Aug. 3, practice the next day and race one moto per class on Aug. 5-7. Bob Kimball rode a cool-headed pair of motos in 250cc Amateur action, laying back and letting riders in front of him fall. Kimball let attrition give him the lead "in each moto and was then able to keep hard charging Shawn Gerber just out of striking range in both 'races. Gary Ames and Shane Heikes each had a fourth and fifth, but the second moto finish is the tie-breaker, and Ames squeaked into third overall. Utah's Gary Maurin won the first 250cc Novice race, and Wyoming's Lennie Arnold won the second, but they couldn't get in the top three overall. Maurin fell to eighth, and Arnold dropped to 14th in their other motos so Allan Walker's dust-eating third and fifth performance gained him the overall victory. A fourth and fifth by jim Richmond gave him a close second, and Randy Woodard took third with 2-7 finishes. Kenny Ulibarri finished behind fellow Salt Lakers Brad Frampton and Brent Gray in the first 125cc Expert rnoto and was content to sit in second place and watch Coloradoan Bear Hensley win the second race. Ulibarri earned top money, Hensley was second and Gray just behind in third. Chad Bangerter put on an impressive show in 125cc Amateur racing. He had to work from fifth to first in the initial moto and from fourth to first in the last. jay Day put Fillmore, UT, in the results with a strong second overall, and Heath Hills was third. In Division A of the Novice 125s, jeff Chesnut never let anyone get close to him all day for a pair of unchallenged wins. Division B was a dogfight between Dale Turner and Dan Dansie. Turner 's win over Dansie in the second moto gave him the narrow overall win. Danny Good took third. In Mini class action, Expert Brent Smith had a pair of wins, Amateur Brad Lewis was a winner, 7-11 Novice A hI Co be ' k d f S ey r t twice wor e rom fourth to first to take top honors, and Blair Cropper beat 12-15 Novices Casey Newberry and Brad Christensen . Phillips By Eric Raits SPRINGVILLE, UT, JUNE 25 Riding with a neck injury sustained in an Odyssey race last week Scott Phillips fell violently in the second 250cc Novice moto and broke a collarbone and leg tonight at Suntana's MX. Phillips had grabbed the lead and was trying to stay in front of first moto winner Butch Wilson when the two tangled in mid-air as Wilson attempted to pass, Wilson managed to stay-up and went on to win. Bruce Carlisle worked like a ditch digger for a second in the 125cc Amateur class behind Brent Hatfield, Carlisle led the first moto then fell, letting Hatfield by but got up and took the lead to finish first. In the second rnoto, Carlisle moved . from third to first then got sandwiched and dropped back to third. He moved back up to second, fell, dropping to fourth, and had to scramble back for a second at the finish. Wayne Youd finished third overall. Dirk Clayson relaxed in the 125cc Novice class, spending all night in the lead letting Bryon Hatfield do the chasing for second place. Dan Dansie earned a third the hard way, having to come from near last to third in the final moto. . The 125cc Experts put on their usual buzzing ballet. Roger Braithwaite and Roger Zeeman each had a first and second. Zeeman won the first moto but fell while in the lead in the second; dropping to fourth. He had to get past Mickey Kirk and ' W a r re n Lewis while Braithwaite blithely extended his lead. Lewis, riding in his first Expert race, wouldn't , play dead and swapped places with Zeeman several times. By the time .Zeeman got back into second place, Braithwaite had what looked to be an insurmountable lead. Zeeman put his head down, charged and got back on Braithwaite's rear wheel only to bobble and miss the chance for a shot at first. Mark Ahlin had a fine ride in the Open Novice class. Ahlin did some fancy Passing to get into the lead in the first moto only to break a plug wire and open the door for the first of two weekend wins for jeff Boyd. Paul Chilton was second, and Randy Gray was third. Stephen Fullmer wasn't bothered by a promotion from Novice to Amateur. Last week's Novice winner was this week's Amateur winner. Fullmer led all but two laps and ' won both motos. • Results MINI:1.Shane Prescott (Suz); 2.Chance Maughm (Yam). 80 NOV 7-11 : 1. Shelby Bringhurst (Yam); 2. Brook Beckstrom (Yam). 80 NOV 12-15: 1.
