Williams, Bault blaze Clarks Branch MX By Clay Ligh t ROSEBURG , OR, JUNE 27 Steve Wi lliams (He rb's Cycle/ Yam support) and Gary Bault (Yam of Roseburg) came out on top of the Pro heap by both taking a mo to in a combi n ed 250 and Open Pro race at Cl arks Branch MX today. Williams rode solo as th e lone 250cc Pro while th ree Open P ro s gave chase, as in th e second moto. The largest class of the da y was 125cc C with three B riders thrown in , making a field of 18· riders o n a cloudy day of racing. R ick Gunderson (Eugene Yam ), Junior Bret Gilikson (Eugene Su z) and a n o ther hot Junior, Steve Nelson (Rosebu rg Suz ), came off the line as top th ree. T hings changed, however , and Intermediate Larry Brumwell (Ya m of Springfield) moved into second . Gunderson did manage to take the win with Brumwell second a nd Nelson th ird and first Crider. Second rnoto it was once aga in Gunderson putting his Ya ma ha into the lead with Nel son m ovin g up to challen ge th e B rider. Gilikson rode in third until being passed by Brumwell. Later in th e moto, the leaders were hitting lapped ri ders.. Gunderson got by th e backmarkers, but Nelson and Bru m well were caught in tra ffic, le tt i n g Gunder son ta ke a no th er win for the B overal l. Nel son al~o wen t I -I taking the C overa ll win. First Pro con test had Ba u lt , Jim Jones (KTM) and Dan a H ansen (Yam of Roseburg) besting Williams off the line. Williams wasted very little time going around H ansen then Jones to move up to challenge Ba u lt for the lead. Williams fou nd the going rough when faced with p u ttin g on a pass on the local ace . Ba u lt took th e first moto win for the Open class and Williams the 250 win. J ones finished second Open a nd H a nsen third. Moto two saw William s move into an early comma nding lead, Hansen, Bault and J ones on the Pro-Am number one Pro 's rear fender in search of one p ayoff in each class. ' Ba ult worked by Hansen to move into second place, but Willia ms was unstop p able and took th e m ot o wi n, lickin~ the Open riders. Holt, Mlchlitsch take PIR night MX By Bria n Barnes PORTLAND, O R, JUNE 24 D & S Cycles Suzuki rider Ted Holt and Eastside Kawasaki/ DG-supported T im Michlitseh, along with Cycle World Honda 's Darryl Semmler, took Pro wins tonight in race number 12 of th is year' s high point championship at Portland International Raceway. Holt outlasted a small field in th e 125cc Pro class. After being runnerup to Michlitsch in the first moto, he too k th e second moto win and the overall wi th some bad luck on the part of Michlitsch, whose motor wen t sour and was unable to fin ish moto two. Yamaha-mounted Ste ve Co rcoran re turned to the racing scen e after a lon g lay-off , finishing second overall after posting a 5-2 tally. Suzuki p ilot R ic Burkinshaw was th ird . . In 250, Michlitsch had little trouble winni n g both rnotos of the class h e has dominated a ll year here a t P IR .
