Post picks up ARRA Riverside ,Gold Cup win By Lori Tyson RIVERSIDE, CA, JUNE 27 A gold Kruggerand was up for grabs today in 600cc Production at the American Road Racing Association's Gold Cup ... 32 Race at Riverside International Raceway, and Aaron Post went home the wealthy man as he styled his wa y to the win. Post took an early lead in the 15lap'main event and dazzled everyone by keeping the front spot the entire race. San Diego Kawasaki West's Steve Sowden crossed the line six seconds after Post to take second. There was a four-way conflict over third with Mike Haller, Steve Vague, joe Bruscella and Walt Nitto all going for it, and in the end Vague crossed first. Graig Roloff and Doug Toland also had a great race between themselves, with Danny Weaver joining in near the end; Toland came out ahead. Frank Mazur, very tired from racing nearly every race the night before at Ron Pierce's Bakersfield track, started way back in 14th place but by the end had moved all the way up to sixth - and since trophies were awarded through sixth, he still took home a trophy. Post was still pumped from that win when he went out in 600cc Box _ Stock and took another victory , but , this time by a scant two and a half seconds over Vague. Sowden took third after a hard battle with Doug Toland, who blew a couple of fuses on lap eight and was out of con ten tion. There was a marvelous duel between Scott Harmala and Walt Nitto for fourth, and in the end Granger Ra cing-sponsored Harmala took it. . In 250cc GP a slim, trim Dave . Emde on the Bob Endicott TZ took his I :33 lap times and made himself SI00 for his first place showing. Emde went from a poor fourth place start to a 20-second advantage over second place Mike Haller by the end of the 10 laps. jon Slobom and Leland Han: cock finished out the top four. LaPierre/Taylor took .the Sidecar win after the field was narrowed to only three rigs (due to a crash in practice which eliminated Walt Garnett/ David james). LaPierre/Taylor put on a stunning display for the crowd, 'gettin g sideways through turns and putting a good bit of distance between themselves and second place Van Orsdale/Thornas. The 450cc Production race was again the Howard Monise show as the Duralube/Diaz Racing sponsored rider took another win. jeff Braucht (on his Box Stocker) took the second place trophy, and Danny Coe protege Mark Capell was secure in third. The first 125cc GP was run in conjunction with the 450cc Production, and Len Gambo beat not only the others in his class, but most of the 450s as well. Barry Sandalwood was stuck in traffic most of th e race and had to settle for second. Formula Four entrant Don Nelson and 250cc Production rider Robert Pritchard fought it out for the overall win in the Formula Four/250cc Production/IOOcc GP clash, and Nelson on h is Can-Am ·too k the checkers first . Royce Flora was triumphant over Dusty Behrman in the 100cc class after Dusty went at it with jeff Kratka , who took second 250. Terry Statum won the Open Box Stock trophy, with jerry Cline taking his third trophy of the day with his second place finish. Earl Roloff and Mike Minnig, ARRA's resident dirt trackers, put out an superb effort in the 750cc class, and both showed their own unique half dirt track/half road race style as they traded leads all the way to the flag, with Roloff ahead at the end. When the gate dropped for the start of the first moto, it was Larry who roosted his way into the lead fol lowed by john, Alvarado and Mike Gillies (Suz). Within a few laps Larry had developed a slight lead leaving john and Alvarado to battle over second. The duel for second was fierce . Alvarado tried every trick in the book to get by john, but time ran out for Alvarado as Larry took the win followed by john and Alvarado. . The start of the second moto saw Alvarado take revenge by stealing the holeshot ahead of Larry and john. Alvarado held the throttle wide open and developed a comfortable margin by the second lap. However, Larry managed to keep the leader in sight. With only, two laps remaining in the moto, Larry and the heat began to catch up to Alvarado. By the time the checkered appeared Alvarado only had a few seconds advantage over Larry. But Alvarado held on to take the win followed by Larry and john. Results PEE WEE : 1. Dale S mart (Yam); 2. CRC Dunes to Buskirk, Neubarer By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, A, JUNE 25 The 250cc Beginners, the original wild bunch, took the International Track by storm tonight at CRC's Dunes motocross. . jim Neubarer turned his Suzuki loose and took charge at the start of the first moto, leaving absolute madness behind! There 'was a five-way . baule.for third, and one racer 'go t out . ... , , a' Cdlornla-A.n•••• of shape and made two complete 360 degree turns, never banging a single handlebar. Neubarer pulled away and led the pack across the finish line, on his way to back-to-back wins. The second round of action found Neubarer once more in command but with a shake-up among the other positions. Clyde Williams, who finished his first moto in fifth , slipped into second and fought off an unruly pack down to the end. When the night'S racing drew to a close, Neubarer led his Suzuki down victory row, Williams cinched second place and taking third overall honors with a 3-5 tally was james Quafchnick, aboard a Yamaha. The 250cc Pros exploded onto the track early in the evening with Andy Segale, riding for Suzuki of Santa Barbara, on his way to a qualifying spot for the Coliseum. Throughout the first moto, Segale was under attack from Yamaha sup. port racer Erin Buskirk and Maicomounted Mark Nation running second and third, respectively. Nation had his hands full just staying in the top three. By mota's end, Segale managed to find some room to breathe and led the troops back to the pits. Buskirk followed in second with Nation fighting to hold onto third. When the machines came to life for their second round, a duel went down between Burkirk and Nation with Scott Curtis, riding for Century Kawasaki , sneaking by everyone and taking over second. When the night 's racing drew to an end, Buskirk led the way , taking down top dollar, Segale took fourth and still managed enough points for second place loot, Curtis held onto second to take home third overall honors, and Nation, with a smooth 3-3 tally, finished fourth .
