Cogar gets second wi n in a row at Costa Mesa By Kennet h R. Kellogg COSTA MESA , CA, JULY 2 " Fox Night," as ex pected, was a tremendous success tonight at the Orange Cou nty Fairgrounds with all ladies admitted for free. The racin g ma tche d th e exciting atmosphere of th e stands. The Scratch main event ma tched Alan Christian and Mike Bast in a spectacular battle, worthy of two of America's best modern gla dia to rs. The second h alf of raci ng bega n with the Thi rd D ivision roo kies. Their first a ttempt at the main event resulted in a red-flag res ta rt . When the event was underwa y, again Will Harper, riding from the zero.. took the lead and led for the en tire race. Finishing second was Mark G randberg; Ra nd y Blevins wok th e third spot. The Second Division main also had the misfortune of having to be restarted - twi ce. O n the third start, Tom Conrad took the lead out of the gate. O n lap two Chris Reich a rd t took over first as Den ny Scopellite took over second. Scopelli te looked very impressive, ridi n g from th e 30yard line. He won h is he a t and fin ished a very solid seco nd in a race that was red-flagged and ca lle d an official race. Reichard t was first, Scopellue second, Conrad third an d Cary Faas fourth. For the second week in a row, Sterling Cogar came up the winner in the Handicap main, but not wi thout problems for this event, too, had to be restarted. On the seco n d attempt Cogar again got a good stan, rode a smooth race, worked h is way th ro ugh traffic and came up the win n er. Mike Curoso, riding fro m way bac k on the 40, worked his wa y into seco nd place. Finishi ng th ird was a noth er 40-ya rdli ner, Mike Faria. Tom Hughes, rid ing fro m the 20, led for nearly two laps a nd fin ish ed fourth when at the end of lap two h e took the turn too wide. The Scra tch main consisted of Ge ne Woods, Eddie Ingels, Alan Christian and Bast . T h e start was perfect, a ll four riders staged a nd aw aiting the ga te. The crowd grew silent, then wham, th e gate flew up, an d all fo ur riders h ead ed at full accelera tion for turn one. Bast came out o f tu rn one clearly in th e lead, Christia n second , Woods third and Ingels fou rth , O n th e second lap th e on ly excha n ge was Ingels wh o moved to third, leav ing Woods last. H owever, the biggest change of the n ight, perhaps even the year, was Christia n . Riding with all the speed tha t has won many championships, Christi a n did the unbelieva ble - he passed Mike Bast when Bast had the lead, a feat ra rely don e. Bast fin ished seco nd, Ingels third and Woods fo urth . Next week is th e Orange Co u nt y Fair a n d, of course, the fair derby. La st year's winner, Robert Pfetzing, said h e is loo kin g to rep ea t la st year's derby win.
