My - S..rch.....t - Sidewinder Road from the B ra nks just a few short mon ths ago. The top five finishers all dropped just two points, all in the last four mi les to the fin ish line which was set up as a special test by CRC course layou t chief Larry Langley. The rid ers liked the special test finishing there as they could then relax with a cold drink to soothe thei r disap pointment s, or to celebra te their victories, Third overall was Mark Amendola, who nailed do wn the first B slot. Amendola was recently a C rider who was also promoted to A ride r status by CRC refe ree Ar t Jensen after another top five finish. Mark is right in there threatening for his first overall also . The event was laid out in an ticipation of hot weather bu t Mother Nature seemed to forg et that it was mid-June and laid m ild 80 degree temperatures on the lucky 400 riders who signed up. A one hour earl ier than normal starting tim e (7 a.m.) got a few riders in trouble as they didn 't read thei r instructions and sho wed up la te. T he two loops were kep t short (around 30 miles each ) an d fairly easy in case of hot weather but mos t of the riders agreed it was a very fun course. The first loop ran west towards Californ ia City's Park C wh ere it looped and came back. Som e fun roll ers an d trails through th e high brush highligh ted the loo p . First overa ll one looper was Scott Bristol, a Min i C rider dropp ing jsu t eigh t seconds for the win. Tied for second overa ll was Michele Keast (H on ) and Scott Si nning (Hus). Michele, daugh ter of Harry Keast was on her new XR200 Honda, obviously adapting to it rather well.Sinnig had his last ride as a C und er 16 rider; he was bumped to B sta tus after winning his class again on his 390 H usky. Ano ther no table ride was turned in by Kath y Herndon wh o finished sixth in the A Wom en's class. Kathy crashed and bro ke her arm but still finished; how ever she is out of action for awhile. No trail projects for her for awhile. The secon d loop was harder per e RC policy but still fun. The course went for miles in the Rand Mountains up and down rollers, made a loop down in to the Fremont Valley and came back up the Ra nd Mountains up to Government Peak via two ways: An fA' rider way an d an other easier way for all the ot her riders. This section had a lot of riders pysched out, not knowing what CRC had waiting for them bu t it wasn 't all that bad. There was a pre tty good uphill on the"A" section tha t CRC th ought might be too hard for the C riders, so they were routed around. A reset near the top let everyone have a few minutes to rest an d think about the upcoming special test wh ich would tax their riding skills, as the section would determine who wo uld win the enduro. The winner of the p revious month's enduro, Rob Mesecher (H us) missed the turn back onto the trail while on the " A" riders' onl y section, bypassed the reset and came into the check leading into the special test 14 minutes ear lyI Rob was upset bu t admitted to not watching his ro u te sheet close enough. H is dad was riding with Rob and also too k the wrong way but reali zed the error, came back and was OK. Experience sometimes pays off. The last four miles was very tight and ran through the tight ca nyons in the area at 36 mph. The next event will be the Gringo Enduro, Aug . 22 at Rosarito Beach in Baja, Mexico. • KENNY ROBE RTS DALE SINGLETON 11th ANNUAL EDDIE LAW N SO FREDDIE SPENCER CHAMPION SPARK PLUG 200 JULY 10-11, 1982 LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY MONTEREY, CA WINSTON PRO SERIES ..• .;.:..
