Hotli,ne fast Amateur, Larry Brown. Taking fourth was anot her Amateur Russ Kur isu. In the O Pen race it was Dan Smith (Hus) taki ng the lead past the bomb but Smith's great ride wasn 't to be and he was soon out with a flat. Second was ano ther of our best, Lee Scheffers. Dan Ashcraft was third and the " An imal," Chris Cran da ll, was fourth . Across the finish it was Ash craft tak ing the overall win after a very fast three laps. Secon d was Crandall, doi ng ano ther fine job. Sch effers took a well earned third. Worki ng hard in the heat of th e day Sean Johnson worked h is way up to tak e first , Amateur. Second was an o the r on e of our Amateur aces, Ken Ovi att. Taking the third Amateur spo t was Mark Molina. The race that brought th e most excitement and yelling was the kids ' race . When the banner dropped it was Stephanie Shuler off the line first. These kids went to work fast and after one of five laps it was Keith Loonsfoot leading. Second was Mark Paproski. Ricky Jackson held on for th ird until -th e fourth lap wh en he went down (no t hurt), Shawn Van moved up for third. At the fin ish it was Loonsfoot, Paproski and Van. These kids would all love to have more of this type of races to show their ability. They were all grea t. The Pro race was all Ashcraft's. Smith was out early wi th a flat tire. Scheffers had seized. Chuck Pettigrew was gaining ground on Ashcraft for two laps, but being out of shape he said he just couldn't hold on . At the finish of a very fast paced race it was fl ying Ashcraft. Pe ttigrew took second. Tim Sinclair took a third, not bad for his first ride on a big bike. Bill Saltzman took fourth. Harry Keast was top Senior 'at the Tenderfoot Enduro. Miller, Smith, Ashcraft take HBMC Dual EuroScrams By Shirley Upp LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, JUNE 26-27 A full weekendof racing hosted by the Huntington Beach M.C saw Chuck Miller, Dan Ashcraft, Bill Saltzman, Brett Howell, Oren Beck and Dick Postma ' take victories in the Amateur/Expert classes. ' Saturday 26 At 9 a.m. the banner dropped on the Vet race. Gary Charters (Suz) took the lead and kept it for the entire four laps while Bill Saltzman had problems and was dead last off the starting line. At the finish it was Charters taking the win; but Saltzman had come up through the pack and closed it down to within 10 seconds after Charters had problems with his chain. Richard Jackson stayed with the front runners for third overall. First 250cc was Russ Jones, who got by Jim Bringhurst while he was looking the wrong way! Bringhurst had a bad get-off, and after seizing once, still took a second in class. The Senior race was cut to only three laps as time schedule was starting to over lap. Open riders Gary Charters and Ron Surber went for it while Dick Postma on his KTM took command of the 250cc class. In th e C ' bike class it was Dave Kersting leading full throttle, knowing that lurking somewhere back in the dust Lou Monterone was waiting to make his move . At the finish 'it was once aga in Charters, who must be making or breaking some sort of record. Second was Surber. Postma, with a flat , never let up and took a healthy third over all and first 250. Monterone came out of the dust and, in the home stretch, overtook Kersting for first C bike . Kersting said he never saw the white flag and thought he had another lap. First Open Amateur was hard charging Virgil French. The 200cc race was dominated by Bret Howell, who rode this race for Murphy (his dog), who was bitten Friday night by a rattlesnake. Oren Beck III pushed Howell for one lap until he did a mean get-off. Lap two it was still Howell with Tom Elias in hot pursuit. Running fourth overall was super fast first Amateur Dan Theel. Howell (Hon) flew across the finish for a first overall. Second was Elias on his new Yamaha. Beck was third and Theel stayed first Amateur. , Oh by the way, Murphy's fine. In the 250cc race it was Chuck Miller (Yam) who took charge. Ray Conway was running second with Dan Ashcraft third. For three laps Miller held firm and extended his lead. Ted Hunnicut moved up to second by the end of lap one. Conway was out of it after a bad get-off and 'Ashcraft went out with bike problems . At the finish it was Miller for the win, despite two flat tires. Second was first Amateur Mike Fitzgerald, who rode a great race and asked to thank Russell Pike .Third was another Sunday The Vet race was all Saltzman's. Jackson was second after one lap. Amateur Ron Nelson was third and having a wild ride. At the checkered it was Saltzman with a nice lead. Nelson was second and very excited; he said he had the best ride ever. First 250cc Vet was Bringhurst. Terry Thompson took a fourth today. Earl Shuler took a fifth after running third until he slid out on the first lap. ' The Senior race once again belonged to Charters from start to finish . Surber took a second after a very intense ride. First 250cc was Al Guzman. Monterone took an easy first C bike . . In the 200 race Elias took the lead of a very fast paced race. On the second lap Elias got off hard; he couldn't remember what he hit. Beck took over the lead with Howell pushing him hard. At the finish it was Beck taking the checkered with Howell second. Third was Bobby Charters, who had worked his way up from sixth. Theel had a great race and took first Amateur. Miller took the 250cc race once again from start to finish. Pettigrew's long absence from the desert.wasn't showing today as he stayed in hot pursuit of Miller for the entire race. Steve Webb chased Pettigrew around for four laps but couldn 't quite overtake him. So ' at the finish first was Miller, who wanted to thank Terrycable, Hi-Point and Yamaha for thier help. Pettigrew took a well earned second and third was Webb. Fourth and first Amateur was Fitzgerald who had a great weekend of racing. Hunnicut took fifth after being troubled with flat tires all weekend. The Open race saw Crandall leading after one lap, only to drop back wi th a fla t. Ashcraft took over the lead for one lap, only to al so acquire a flat. Smith took over the lead and he hel d it for th e last two laps. At the fin ish it wa s Smith wh o was abl e to keep h is tires infla ted and his front wheel straight. After changing tires Ashcraft took second. T hird was hard riding Phil Cloward . Mike Mulcon ery too k fourth overall. First Amateur today was ace Ovia tt. Novice/ Beginner In th e Vet class Greg T agliaferr i too k charge of this race on Saturday and after passing Ra lph Smith he had no problems the next th ree laps. At the finish it wa Tagliaferri with an easy win. Jim Farrand moved up to take second. In for third was T.F. Bingenheimer. In Sunday's race it was Ralph Smith taking the win with Tim Gilligan giving Smith a run for it. Third was another fast guy, Jim Farrand. In the women's race Saturday it was Diane Holeman trying to fight off Lori Farmer for the first three laps. Farmer overtook Holeman on the last lap and came on in for the first with Holeman second. In for a third was Debbie Hopkins. Getting first Novice was Denise Engstrom. Sunday's race saw Jolene Payne in charge all the way. Riding with all her sister's riding gear must have , made her twice as fast. Taking second was Holeman and third was Debbie Hopkins . Denise Engstrom was moved up to Amateur Saturday night and promptly took another first in class as an Amateur. In the C bike class Saturday it was Eric Hallgath leading from start to finish. Second was Kent Worley. Third was Mik e Monterone. In Sunday 's race once again Hallgath took command and never backed off to take another decisive win. Worley came in for another second. Third was hard charging Larry George. ' Andy Mathews took complete charge of Saturday's 250cc race and for four laps he enjoyed his dust free ride. Byron Statham moved up to take a second. Brett Shaner did some moving up and finished a solid third. In Sunday's race it was once again Mathews who dominated this race leading from start to finish. Second was #269.Taking third was Jeff Sloan. A notable victory was had Saturday in the Open Novice race by Rick Price. Leading all four laps Price took the checkered first. Second was Steve Williams. Third was John Clarich. In Sunday's race Pete Tolmasoff led for two laps.On the last lap Williams took over the lead and came in for the first overall. Tolmasoff stayed in for a second. Third was hard riding Richard Stone. HBMC wants to thank all riders for their donations to Bob Balentine. I want to thank Tom Clark who helped with the Novice /Beginner results. Sampson tough at CRC Tenderfo,ot Enduro By Sylvester Bogard RAND MOUNTAINS, CA, JUNE 13 ·Sixteen-year-old Scott Sampson (Kaw) edged out Rick Daniel by just three seconds to win the California Racing Club's Tenderfoot Enduro.
