Marc Fontan formed the other three. Mamola was riding wi th his ha n ds ope n instead of wrapp ed aro u nd the clip-ons . " Ka taya m a tried to out-brake me th en went by about 50 m p h quicker an d almost took my front wh eel OUt. I know I could h ave stayed wit h Kenny, bu t m y hands were tingling so much a n d the bike was vibrating," he sai d. H e finished fifth overall an d sai d, " T h is race does a lot for my confiden ce." Uncini passed Sheene in a righth an der at the end of the straigh taway and it appeared that Sheene had lost p ower but that wasn't the case. " I hit a wet spot and got into a ta n k slap per. My head and knee hit the fairin g and broke the fairi n g mount an d I think I tw iste d the forks," said the popular English ma n. Once out fro nt it was just a ma tter of how large his margin of victory wo u ld be and for Uncini it was about eigh t seconds on Crosby who' d moved past Sheene and Robert s. Fifth went to van Dulmen wh o took sixt h in the ; overall results. . The show wasn 't over wi th Uncini ' in the lead as Roberts repea ted his ' ea rlier riding demo nstra tion when passin g Sheene on the eigh th lap. It was a good sp o t, but he still too k th ird to Crosby, but seco nd on th e victory podium . " T h e times fel t better in the second ha lf," said Crosby. "The tires were perfect. We just ha d to scoop a li ttle dirt out of the carbs from my run ning off the track to get' it ready and cha nge the fairin g." " We did almost nothing between hea ts," team leader Roberto G all ina said of Vncini 's lightning-fast Su zuki. " H e said it vi brated so me so we chan ged brake discs, then the' entire rear brake caliper came off all a t on ce on the last la p . All that was left was th e disc. "Somethin g was wrong with the bike because it vibrated a lo t, but there wer e no major problem s. I cha nged the tire because whenever you stop you need a new one, I wasn't su re if I should change tires until the secon d lap then I knew that th e new tire was better. When the rain came it cleaned the track." T h e race marked the halfway point in th e season for the 500 s wit h V ncini holding a three point advantage over Roberts 63 to 60. With the best combination on the track and wins in three of the last four races, alo ng with a third, Uncini looks like a better than even bet to gi ve Ga ll ina his second World Championship in a row . Alt hough he admits it wo n 't be easy, the friendly Italian has the confidence to take the title and th e look of a wi nner. .• I Results 50cc : 1. Stefa n Doerf li nger (Kre); 2.
