Local television and radio personalities too k part in a race he ld to earn money for the Harli ngen Emergency Medical Services. (Fil e photos) Monjaras motors to Arroyo MX win' By Penni Meyer HARLINGEN, TX, -JUNE 20 Despite the almost unbearable heat, many racers and fans took p art in the races held today at Arroyo MX Park. 48 In the first rnoto of the 125cc Inter-rnediate class', Bryan Monjaras, aboard a Suzuki 125, had it all. As soon as the gate dropped, Monjaras was the first one to be seen coming around the corner, followed closely by Leslie Elsik and Mike Maley. In moto two, however, Lee Uribe on a Honda CR125 surprised many people. He shot right out of the gate and managed to hold on to his lead to take the checkered flag first , However, close behind were Monjaras and Maley battling for second p lace. Mon jaras managed to hold Maley off, though, for a second p lace second the hands of visiting Expert Bobby Pi ckard (KTM). Moto on e saw Pickard pull the holeshot with Brown in hot pursuit. By lap four , however,it was obvious that the moto belonged to Pickard. Then suddenly on the white flag lap, P ickard 's lead started dwindli ng as Bro wn began a charge that saw him gain 10 bikelengths in less than a la p . But at the checkered flag it was Pickard first with a still charging Bro wn second. In . moto two it was Pickard who again jetted into the lead, but Brown was right there applying pressure with Suzuki-mounted Tommy Pavelka, who was finally ' riding to potential after a poor start in moto one, third. Brown took over the lead on lap four, taking advantage of a slight bobble by Pickard over the triple jumps. Two turns later, Pavelka slipped by and took off after Brown who was trying to get as much distance as possible . between himself and Pickard. 'It was soon plain, however, that Pickard was having a hard time keeping the pace. At the end of the moto, a very determined Mark Brown finished first, followed by Pavelka who was foll owed by the still la borin g KTM of Bob by Pickard. . . , Local 125cc Novice Tom Koula borrowed a 250 '.'j us t for kic ks" an d blas ted the 250cc Novices for the two motos wi th visi ting rider Sean Knaack churning out back-to-back seconds with two fine rides. The Over 30 class belonged to Yamaha-mounted Gary " Mr. MotoX" Parker who was followed by an unrelenting Bob Johnson (Yam). The excellent track conditions were the product of the hard working track crew under the supervision of Mr. Ro y Bagget t. Ma ny tha n ks must' go out to the U.S . They say Ross Do wns breeds ch ampions; well, we have some fut ure G ra nd National Ch amps in the m aking now. Rain th e ni ght before pro vid ed a very smooth , fast short track for al l. G reg Teague led Scotty Williams a nd T im Kay home in the 60cc mains with Clayton Hull ho t after th em . Trace Polson returned to the wi nner's circle after an a bsen ce d ue to break downs and showed Mike Weedin and Clayton Hull how it's done in the 80cc race . Fast Willie McCoy easily won the 125cc main with Clay Carrol and Tubby Dotson following. , The 250cc Amateur race was a crowd-pleaser with Jimmy Tarlton coming from last place to first only to crash in the last corner. Tubby Dotson won followed by John Gladwell and Jack Yost. Bill Herndon proved to be the man to reckon with in the 250cc Expert ' main. Ja mes Harrington an d Odel Davis followed. 'Mo tocross riders 'had a wet track , but it did not slow them; seems th ey went wide open sideways an yh6jv " . Jimmy H older, Gary 'G arr et, Jim '~ Mason and T im Kay put on a show to please all in the 80s. . Steve Lee led hard charging Mark Capps and Dan. Arnold around tl)e track in the 125cc'main.event. ...~ Russ Houdin led tne -,250s until crashing, and Mitch Myers got by for the win followed by Jim Laffey, The Open race saw Steve Jones take the lead for several laps, crash and come from last back to take the , win followed by Dave Houdin and Mark Willis.
