RR By Frank N ellis SO NO MA, CA , JUNE 13 The American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM) North me t today a t Sears Point R aceway. T he wea th er was perfect for road racing; the su n wa s warm, th e wind wa s mild, a nd the track sp eeds were hot. The Fo rm u la III race sta rted a t m id-afternoo n when track co nditio n s were at th eir best. Bob L ugl iani bu rst into the earl y lead on h is very strong Rotax-powered Armstro n g. H e was followed by Kevin Peltz and Bo b Runion, both on Yam a ha T Z250s. The pace was ver y fast; a ll th e leaders were cuttin g laps in the high 1:52s as they circled the 2.5-mile track. From the start , Lugliani started p ulling away from Peltz, while Bo b R unyon looked for passing roo m . Peltz sa id later, " It's hard to jum p off m y su perbike and onto a T Z. T h e su pe rbike is big and cum bers o m e and has more torque a nd ho rsepo wer than you can us e h ere at Sea rs. T h e T Z is ligh t and n imble a nd quick. It takes a few l a p s to m a k e th e adjustmen t." R u n yo n got by Peltz o n the th ird lap and set his sigh ts on Lug liani, who had a three-second lead o n h im . But R u n yo n sta yed on th e gas and started to reel in th e Ar m stron g. By th e m id point Runyon was on Lugliani's tail a nd looking fo r passin g roo m in a lm ost every co rner, . H e got his chance 'in tu rn seven, a tight right-hand haripin. The two riders approached the turn side-byside. Runyon stayed on th e throttle an instant longer, but he had to stand his Yamaha on its front wheel to ge t it slowed down for the tu rn. Lugliani, by no w had learned some quicker ways around the race co urse. He set up fo r his pass o n th e back straight, but he could only pull to within a few feet of R u n yo n 's rear wheel as the pair approach ed the hairpin. This time Lugliani wo n the braking contest. Bu t Runyon was not out of it yet. Lugliani found himself enterin g th e turn a little hotter than he wanted to . H e had to swing wide on his exi t, giving Runyon an opportunity to repass, but the extra power of the Rotax en gi ne squirted Luglia ni into the lead. Runyon had slowed since he lost first. By the next lap, Peltz had ca ug h t u p to Runyon. Peltz follo wed him , looking for a p lace to pass, and Kevin took him going up the hill follow ing start/finish. Bo b Lugljani crossed th e fin ish line first on h is Armstrong/ Ro tax marking the first time in ove r a decade that a Yama ha did not co m e in first in this cla ss. Kevin Peltz too k seco nd on hi s Pro fessio nal Deliveries T Z250, wit h R unyon in third on his Bill Smi th Machine and Quan dry TZ250. T he BSA ridden by John McCoy wi th its ma ssive single cylinder torq ue to ok th e hol eshot and the early lea d in th e Vinta ge race. Bob Garrett's T riton was i n second followed by Chri s Quinn on his Wh eel Works Ducati Di ania. Garrett , wh o was in his fir st road race, took some time to adjust to racing speeds on his antiq ue machi ner y. But by th e second la p, Garr ett had caught th e BSA a nd fin ishe d first. Frank Mazur, curren t h ol der of the AFM number one plate and the win ningest rider in AFM , had a mechan ical protest lodged against his G Pz550. Joe Montoya, who has had to sett le for second beh ind Frank a ll yea r, requested a com plete engine teardown to ensure that Frank's bike was a rea l box stock GPz. Bill Smith, AFM North 's Vice P resident and Ch ief Tech Marshall, and his crew were still dissecting the machine at 10 p.m. Smith's dec ision was still pending at presstime. AFM North meets again on Jul y 4 at Sears Po int. For license and ticket information call 415/327-3323 . • Results _ FORMULA I: 1. R. Oli ver (Kaw); 2. E. Paloheimo (Yam); 3. B. Koegler (Han).
