Armstrong strong at AFM Willow SpringsRR By Lori Tyson ROSAMONDA, CA, JUNE 20 John Glover broke Yamaha's long hold on the Formula Three class as he rode to victory on Kevin Gardner's Rotax powered 42 Armstrong at the American Federation of Motorcyclists' Willow Springs _ meet. . . After leading the first lap, Kevin Peltz was passed in the turn two sweeper by Glover, who had an easy time of it after that. Kevin was relegated to a second place finish , followed by Mick Ofield. Cycle City 's Terry Statum led the 75Occ/Open Stock Production race flag to flag, but Scott Gray, in the 750ccclass, put on the best show as he moved up through the pack and on the very last lap passed Darrell White to take second overall. Danny Hart, who had been battling White for second, took third overall (second Open). In the 750cc-Open Modified Production race it looked like Statum was going to win another one as he got the holeshot and led the first three laps. But on lap four he went into turn six a little too hot and slid his rear tire into Brad Taylor's bike and went down. Terry is OK, except for broken fingers on both hands. Taylor, who was in second , was also taken out of the race which meant that Earl Roloff inherited the lead. Ro loff, after a race long chase by Lee Fleming, went on to take the checkers. Scott Gray, on his 750 Kawasaki, was right up there with the big boys and ended up third overall, first 750cc. A Honda previously owned and raced in the "old days" by Bob Endicott won another 600cc Super Street victory, piloted by Steve Reynosa. At the end Steve was nine seconds ahead of the battle between Jim COllins and Frank Mazur for second . Collins took it, but Mazur was right with him at the line. , In Formula One Lee Fleming, on the Moriwaki-powered Kawasaki Superbike, had it easy until lap six when Steve Mallonee, who had been lurking behind, tried for the lead and gave him a struggle for the last two laps. But the effort was in vain as Lee held on to take the checkers first. The last race of the day was perhaps the best. Frank Mazur led the first four laps of the 600cc Stock Production, but San Diego Kawasaki West's Steve Sowden snatched the number one spot on lap five. Although Mazur was really going at it, this was Steve's race and no one was going to get by. A scant two seconds back in third place, the fight was between Aaron post and Mike Haller, with Haller coming out ahead. Back .in fifth was another heavy confrontation with Scott Harmala fighting off four other bikes the entire race. The next AFM race will be the eighth annual Six-Hour Classic weekend on July 17 ~18 at Riverside International Raceway. Results 750 STK PROD: 1. Scott Grey (Kaw ); 2. Earl Roloff (Kaw); 3. Erik Kehoe had a perfect performance in the 125cc Pro class and took the victory but had a wobbly wheel which made him sacrifice the 250cc Pro battle. John Whelchel took his Yamaha to top money in the 500ccPro class and defeated the efforts of Honda riders Ed Amet and Willie Simons. Kehoe dominated the 125cc Pro class on his Yamaha, and it should be expected that the factory-backed rider would win a local race. Gary Bowman took second today while Roger Hensley won the third place cash. Mike Brown of LOP was fourth with a poor first moto finish. John Whelchel had the first moto of the 500cc Pro class in his hands with a healthy lead over Tracy Oswell (KTM) while Arnet and Simons were having a fantastic battle. Arnet had the lead till Simons made a mid-air pass over the score tower whoop. They came to a ' section of triple jumps, and Arnet swapped off his . Honda and hit hard. Arnet was carried off in the ambulance, and, hopefully , he will make a speedy recovery. Whelchel won the final bout over Simons and Oswell on his KTM. Overall it was Whelchel, Simons and Oswell. Ken Zahrt is well known at Indian Dunes, but he is not the only racer in his family. His brother Jon has lots of talent, too. Jon became the day's I 25cc Intermediate winner. Zahrt had the first rnoto lead ahead of Lance Johnson and Bill Delgado. With the start of the second rnoto, Johnson took the lead with Hondamounted Marco Folchi in . second. Zahrt was moving up quickly and determined to win. Soon, he slid by Folchi and was after Johnson. Zahrt was within striking distance when Johnson made the task easier as he slid out on a corner and allowed Zahrt to take over the lead. Johnson picked up his Suzuki and continued in second place ahead of Delgado. Two wins gave Zahrt the overall brass ahead of Johnson and Folchi. Results 60 NOV: 1. Sean Blanchard (Vam); 2. By Lee Taylor ORANGE, CA, JUNE 13 T oday's California Racing Club Qualifier for the last Los Angeles Coliseum Amateur race, slated for July 18, seemed jinxed from the start. Ron Turner's .truck broke down just outside of Saddleback, and he barely made it to the line for the 250cc Pros' first moto, When the gate dropped, Mike Beier (Yam) got the jump on the pack. Suzuki pilot Richard "Sandman" Sands eased into the shotgun slot and seemeddestined to gather second place gold. Turner was picking off one racer after another after starting back in - the pack. Steve Pfaff and Tim Shelton were mixinz it up over third. By rnoto's end, bails, mechanical breakdown and a guts-and-glory ride b y' Turner turned everything all around. Sands' Suzuki's down tube snapped, forcing him to limp home in ninth. Beier pulled to a stop, his chain locked up into the cases, and Turner, not believing for one second he couldn't win, grabbed a handful of gears and managed to pass the entire field for the win. The second time out, Scott Conaway (Yam) led the way, only to find Turner alongside and stealing the lead into the first lap. Turner, quite simply, did what he's done so many times before - got out in front and left the battle for second. Dennis Hulen managed to hold a crazy group at bay, in particular, "Mad Man" Pfaff. With an extra lap given to the Pros, Turner finished his 16th lap clear out of sight, .grabbing the pot of gold, back-toback wins and a place on the line at the Coliseum. Hulen hung on to second, good enough for third-place loot and a Coliseum slot. Grabbing second overall was Vince McMahon who emerged out of first moto chaos in second and took fourth for the second round. • Results 60 NOV: 1. Joel Tokarsky (Vam). 60 EX: 1.
