issued only on a reservation basis through Ticketron. . 3. Oso Flaco Rd. closed to all users except emergency, enforcement and maintenance personnel. 4. By July Fourth weekend all activity south of O so Flaco Creek is prohibited a nd a ll vege ta ted areas, fenced o r not, are strictly off limits to vehicles. Any vehicles found in th ese a reas wi ll be fined and possibl y impounded. 5. OH V da y use will be limited according to th e en forcement capability 'of th e park rangers and the ATC Dune Patrol. The originally requested fence will run along the Sand Highway at the north, then head east to the buffer zone, south to th e vegetation, then west along the vegetation around Maidenform Flats and on to the ocean at the creek. There will be pilings driven into the sand all the way to the ocean to prevent southern trespass. Needless to say, the area dune users present at the hearing couldn't believe that from as many as 5000 campsites, we were cut down to only 500. Offroaders in attendance at the hearing included representatives of the California Association of 4-Wheel Dri ves, CORVA, Santa Barbara ATV Club, Fun Rentals and the Sand Center. Ross Henry of the Department of Parks and Recreation told the Commission that the restrictions .were too severe and that the ORV community would never accept them. The Commissioners had softened, however, from their February position of a ban on ORV use. They commended the volunteer dune patrol, and said that a's the volunteer program helped control the problems, they would allow more people to camp at Pismo. The . volunteers have spent a lot of time and money working to clean up other people's trash and print user information packets. One other recommendation was 'to separate the day use and camper traffic staging areas and require all the day use people to be off the dunes by II p.m. This II p.m. curfew will also keep people out of the restricted dunes at late night when much of the damage is done. . All the _dune user groups complained that this plan was formulated without inclusion of their ideas and plans. Off-roaders were sup.posedly invited to five task force meetings, but were only allowed at one three-hour session. Once again , the five to 10% of the geeks who think they are a reincarnated Davy Crockett and have to blaze a new trail where ever they go are ruining it for the rest of the concerned recreational users . It's high time we 90%start forcing these thrash- : ers to behave themselves' before they fence up the whole state and all we have left is our back yards! So how about it, folks - abuse it and we'll lose itl . The one ray of hope the off-readers have is that the more work the volunteer group undertakes, the more campsites will become available. The Pismo Beach Dune Patrol is . totally volunteer, and needs help in any way people can offer. Riders donate their time and equipment, and the group has received help from several manufacturers and groups. There are a lot of dirt trackers, including Terry Poovey, that are going to nylon jerseys and pants. After being at the 'Dome and reading all the developements ,on Wise, I must say there sure are a lot of crybabies in a sport that they all say is tough. _ If it is so tough, and all of you are being such babies about this, then maybe you should quit, get out the old rocking chair and take up knitting. The way I see the Steve Wise controversy is "All of you are jealous. " I have never seen a few people that should be able to appreciate Wise's talents and work on .th eirs more" JANIE WATERS Dallas, TX P.S. MX gear protects just as well as leathers with no danger of heat exhaustion. Lackey in Europe Being a long-time subscriber to Cycle News /West, a former motocross racer and a U.S. servicernan stationed in West Germany, I would like to write and tell you about the 500cc MX GP at Beuren, West Germany that I attended last weekend. First of all, it was agreat race with Brad Lackey making come-frombehind runs to finish second overall and Semics charging from next to last place in the first moto to finish 10th and then hanging on to Noyce's rear. fender to finish seventh in the second moto. . But I want you to know that those great racers, Lackey and Sernics, are also great human beings. In between motos, my brother took his homemade WFO sign wi th Lackey's and Semics' names, and both of them autographed it and talked to him about the race and the military men and women who show up at the European tracks to root them on. Also in order to get Semics' autograph, my brother had to borrow a pen from Roger DeCoster, who also gladly autographed his sign. Anyway, I hope to see more GP ' coverage in Cycle News and more American riders over here in the future. By the way, Brad Lackey has just as large a' fan following of Europeans as any of the other racers. I noticed one section of Belgians rooting just as they were IorMalherbe to catch Carlqvist. Guest Ed-torial Pismo use restricted Well folks, it has finally happened. Thanks to a small percentage of off-road abusers, the majority has to suffer for those irresponsible actions. If more people cared about taking care of the land we ride on, what happened at the California Coastal Commission meeting aboard the Queen Mary on june 17 could have been avoided. It was a very complex hearing and took six hours of testimony and debate. What started out as a mere request by the California Department of Parks and Recreation to erect 35,000 linear feet of fencing to protect the Pismo vegetation and to install three booths to collect fees from dune users, turned out to be the' most radical plan imposed on Pismo thus far. On a 12-0 vote, the Commission approved the request on several condi tions. I must warn readers that these conditions are R-rated and may cause less mature readers to cry openly. I. Only street legal vehicles allowed on the beach between the Sand Center and Sand Highway. Off-road vehicles must be trailered to a staging area just south of the Sand Highway entrance. 2.
