T hanks to Bill Flewl llin g and Mel Blaze , S atu rd ay 's fu n eve n ts st arted o ff with an id ea ta ke n from a ski racer's wo rld . Th e riders h ad to slalom their m o t orcy cles th ro ug h a series of flags fo r time and were penali zed for any flags th at were kn ock ed o ver. In the second eve nt you were ex pec te d to take a bite o u t of a hot dog' that was dripping with rnus tard while it hung from a string. You co uld n ' t stop or put y o u r foot on the ground or yo u were disqualified. The specta t o rs really enjoyed this one be cause th e rid ers would us uall y end up with mu st ar d all o ver th ei r face an d hai r an d no h ot dog in th eir mouth ! The last . even t w as taken from the Ro man gladia tor days. Each rid er was give n a rolled up newsp aper an d a ballon was ta ped to the rear fende r. T he idea was to p o~ everybody else's ballon while kee ping yours intact. The fo rty riders were pu t in to a large ci rcle of spectato rs. T he e nd re sult wa s a hap py bal lo n .b ustin g, cras hing , dus ty , te rr ific event. Wh en all of this was over, everyone we n t ov er and po lish ed off a keg of beer in less than an ho ur. The t r ials started off Sunday mo rning wit h a mo re serio us note. It see med that ev ery sec tio n w as we ll planned an d tested th e riders ski ll . without bei ng da ngerous . Section 5 and H were t he ultra n atural sec tions o f th e day, both were absolutely fantastic. Sec tion 5 lay in a wet cree k bed . th at was ti ttered w ith mo ss cove red rocks. It started off in a straight lin e for abo u t 20 yards and th en mad e a tum to th e left and we n t up a slight in cline o f those moss y ro ck s. At the end yo u were to m ak e a righ t tum over th e e nd o f the rocks. Once o u t of th e cre e k, th e section led yo u up a bank and through two handle bar width tree s , a h ard turn to the right and ou t the exi t. Se ction 8 was a dream for a serious tri als rider: only four flags for th e whole . section , two entrance and two exit . It started off on dry la nd and dropped in to a tric kling st re am a bou t a fo o t wi d e wh ich had ban ks abou t 15 feet hi gh . Once in th e stream you we re faced with a three fo o t rocky shelf. If yo u m ad e it over this there was a rock right in the middle of your path that caused m o st riders to dab. Once over these obstacles you had about five feet to regain your balance and rid e up a 2 ~ foot shelf which was followed by loose rocks and a m u d sinki ng ex it. Wow! Experts Bo b Tyson (Rul) and Steve Darrow [Mo n] battled each other over the demanding course all day. Both Tyson an d Darrow see m to be wi th in five poin ts of each other at mast trials, so the concentratio n was running high . They w e re fairly close over most of the section, but Darrow really excelled in section 5 by on ly losing three one's to Tyson's two :I's and a one, Darrow also came on in section 8 with a 3 , a clean, and a one to Tysons tw o five's an d a 3. At the end D arrow turned in a terrific score of 13 pain ts to Tysons 25. Third pl ace Ex pe rt we nt to Bo b Betrucci wi th 32 poin ts los t.
