Rather than running Novice heats, Junior heats, then Expert heats, followed by the semis and the Dash and finally the Mains, they mixed up the program so that each division raced once. The Novice heat was run, then the first Junior/Expert heat. Fastest Expert qualifier was John Hateley, looking for his fourth T'I' win this season. Fastest Junior qualifier was Dan White looking for his first TT win this season. Dan's fast time also gave him his first chance at a Trophy Dash , and he was the only Junior to qualify for the Dash. Novice Tom Berry, the current point leader at Ascot, was out looking for more points and wanted to co ntinue his win ning ways. Gary Bevan s, h owever , had different ideas. He showed the Novices the fastest way ar ound the track by just ace ing ou t Bob Hosford's Honda for th e win in the ligh tw ei gh t m ain. Capturing th ird was Ron Toby, foll owed b y BiD Calicura , Denny Briggs, Berry , Kirb Shropshire , Wayne Farrell, Mik e Laney , J im S tienbach , Don Fra ue be rge r , and Russ Barre tt. He also won the Dash , his first win in that event. Second in the Main went to Mulder followed by Dan White in third. Hateley was fourth. Roger Ring nabbed fifth followed by Joe Brown, Walt Foster, Stu Posey, DeWayne Keeter,Jon Sperry, who laved it down in the South tum on lap 8, and Art Fredenburgh. Tom White pulled into victory circle after the Dash only to find out that there was not only no trophy but also not a tootsie handy for the traditional lip lock. The starter did the, oh, h onors.
