Pierre Karsmakers was t aking . th ings fairly easy as he worked hi s wa y stead ily up through th e pack and into second place behind Hartwig by lap three. Mike R u n y ar d , Gary Sernics and Jimmy Elli s spent the last h alf of the race having a bang up figh t o ve r third p lace with the three finishin g o u t the moto in that o rd e r. The final moto was perhaps the bes t ra ce of the day when John DeSoto quickly took over the lead from Bryan Kenney so on afte r th e st art, followed b y Mike Runyard and Jimmy Ellis. The three banged aro und the c o u rse in a tigh t pack far ahead o f the rest of th e field, each o f th em trying to take th e lead a way from the o the r in a show th at re all y had th e c ro wd on it s fee t. This slam bang ra ce lasted fo r five lap s until Run yar d 's Suzu ki seized u p and he was forced to re tire. DeSo t o and Ellis , were bu rned ou t enough from the action that whe n Karsma kers moved up on them there was nothing they could d o to hold him o-£f as h e passed th em b y to ca p h is clean swee p of all three motos.
