It too k me ten minute s ( tha t I su re ly c o u ld n ' t afford) to ge t up that o ne. as A fter that th ere were only some m ore CERA S outh ro cks, a cou ple m ore len gths of rail road track, a lot m ore m u d , some more lo gs, about three creeks to cro ss , and just to make sure we h ad e n o ugh, we finis he d up o n the rai lroad ties ag ain . The end o f the ru n was actually about three miles from cam p and b etween th e last c hec k and th e camp I ran out o f gas. Even m y extra c an te en full had n't been enough . A fellow on a H u sk y ga ve me a bit and th en a fellow on a H onda gave m e a bit more and I limped o n in. What a run! I w as so tired my bo ne s were rub be r. Moderatel y d iffi cu lt , hu h ? I f th e y eve r th ro w a to u gh one , th ey c an j us t plan on buryin g me a t th e finish . This spring season has seen a bun ch of fin e Enduro sjrn ore than I w ould ev e r p o ssible , le t al o ne h av e b eli eved probable . But fo r me th is o ne w as tops. Beautiful ridin g in th e red dirt fores t, mo re th an 60 p er cent trai ls, eve ry kind o f ch allen ge imag in ab le except a sandwash, an d set right a t th e edge o f a good rider's abilit y . T he onl y com plaint I h eard vo iced o n the whole run - and it w as a le g i t im ate o ne co nce rn e d the marking. There was p lenty o f it and it w as alw ay s p o ssible to find you r wa y, but it w as t he mo st difficult m arkin g to foll ow th a t I have ever seen. Som etimes even wh en y o u kn ew the re was a turn and you had st opped for it , you co uld n ' t find it. S omeh ow, the guy wh o did· th e markin g j ust did n't know where to put hi s arrows a n d rib b o n . Lu ckily h e wa s th orough, if n ot very skillful , so you could n ' t really get lost, just fr ustrated. One o f th e re asons that the CERA North is able to put o n su ch fin e runs is If number 48 is on t ime, tho se guy s inback are in tr ouble! th a t th e y h a ve very good rela tio ns with th e U.S . Fo re st S ervic e. Three of th e lo c al rangers are h ike rid e rs an d qui te compe ten t end u ro riders . Minute 17 this ye a r wa s th e Forest Se rvice minute, wi th thre e ran ger s and o ne of th e ran ger's so n s ridin g. With suc h firs t-h and ex pe rience , they are able to w ork with th e cl u b to la yout good, ch alle ngi ng trail that at th e sa me tim e is unli kely to b e dam aged . In this 105-milc eve n t the re was e x tre m ely little damage in sp ite o f its really ru gged n ature. Th e club is go in g to have t o bl o ck a c o up le o f t rai ls to let tb em gro w ove r a bi t and m a ke a few water b a rs. T bat will b e all th e repair n eeded. In cidentall y, th ose ran gers kn ow th e forest lik e most o f u s kn ow o ur livin g ro oms and the y' re in abo u t the sa me phy sical shape as y o u r average Ol ymp ic runner. The y 're go ing to be so me tough com pe ti tio n in a cou ple o f ye ars! Many of th e top North ern riders are up at the IS OT qualifier thi s week , including b o th o f the J enkins bo ys and Jim Spa rkes, hut a ve ry en th usiastic J ohn T ro u tt stayed d own here just to m a ke sure n obody go t away with fir st pl ace.
