RANCHO CORDOVA , CAL., April 15,
1973 - Today wa s the first of four
races to be held in the CMC Penton
Series here a t McGill Cycle Park.
Thom..s Walton (Bul), of Salinas
fame in th e Aust ralian Pursuit Race held
th ere recently, showed everyone that he
can also rid e mot ocr oss. The Division I
gro up streamed around th e turn-filled
co urse f or twe n ty minutes with Mr .
Walton taking th e win, Larry Liviera
tri ed to challen ge the leader in th e
second mota as did Scott R o gers (D KW)
but neith er could overtake the fas t
Bultaco.
In the Division Il 125, Mark
Schroeder l ook th e overall win over
Steven Hickle on a Pen ton. Mark took
the early lead and went on to win in the
first mota. But in the second mota
Holcomb (Puc) took the lead leaving
Schroeder in second. The Pu ch left
everyone literally in the d ust , but a first
and second place finish gave the overall
win to Schroeder.
Because this was a Juniors only
event, many riders di d get into so me
spots th at were a bit over their he ads.
As a result, there were three p ro bab le
broken legs, and many dramatic crash es.
However, the ambulances were in
abundance with very c om pe ten t aids
driving them. Someone once said, "You
don 't know how fast you can go , until
y o u crash !" (There's go t t a be a better
wa y ...)
The 250 class had a bunch of people
riding. J ohn Putkey on a CZ took the
lead on the fir st lap. But, this race paid
off on co nsiste ncy with a fir st overall
going to Bob Terwittinger (Yam).
Second o verall was Rex McClellan
ab oard h is Honda 2·stroke, and th ird
spo t went to Purkey.
The No . 62 plate was all that was
ap p ar en t in th e third d ivis ion of 250's.
Fred Young the p ilot o f that fast Su zuki
took both wins for first o vera ll in that
group of fasties.
Gary Davis on a 5 00c c Yamaha
sto rm ed t he Open class, and Dann
Pennebaker o n a brand new green
Kawasaki ch ased close behind for a total
of 40 minutes of co mb in ed motos,
T hese tw o guys flat left the rest of th e
g r o u p and probably will be in
con ten tio n for that Penton which
Pen ton West is donating to the winner
o f the seri e s. Ed Wagoner go t the h ol e
sho t in the se cond mota, but the two
tigers passed Ed in the first lap .

SU NNYVALE, CAL., Ap ril 15, 197 3 Ron Self did his thing again today ,
winning both of his classes o n his new
radial finned 250 Maic o. Self put th e
new bike out in fro n t in most of th e
motos and proceeded to tear up the rest
o f the opposition with his explosive
rid ing style.
The real excitement, however, came
in - the 500 Intermediate class. Jeff
Mullins just received on e of the few
Kawasaki 4 50. from Bike World in
Sunnyvale and seemed righ t a t home on
his new bike. Mark Peters, o ne of th e
m an y talen ted Mai co riders from
Trophy Cycles -in Mountain. View, was
recen tly promoted to the In termed ia te
class and started mixing ii up with
Mullins.
Mota two saw Peters get the start on
Mullins, with Jeff pushing hard close
behind. Jeff got his break on the bumpy
straigh t and took the lead from the
blonde hair ed Maico rider. With that
Mullins got the 500 Intermediate win.
In other action Scott McCleiand
(Pen) put on an inspired ride in mota
two of the 125 Juniors. Scott's biggest
opposition came from Kelly Marchbank.
back an d forth wi th Jon pullin g out th e
win in the last mota to take the prize.
The largest class of the day was th e
Novice 250 class which was divided into
three div isions of twenty riders . All
three divisions had tremendous riding
with leads ch an gin g every lap, even the

con tested. By the end of the day and
th ree motos later Mike Fors eth had won
th e fi rs t division, S cott Priest er the
secon d, an d Bill Bledsoe th e third.
One 'of the day's highlights was the
return of Santa Barbara's hottest rider,
Doug Gran t, to racin g with a ful l
sp onsorship by Bul ta co motorcy cles and
Goleta Val ley Cy cle . Doug easily won
all three motos of b oth th e 250 and
