I t was a su rprise, ad ded to by th e fac t that Williams' teammate, John Cooper was not among the 4 5 that qualified. . Sadly, n eith er was Men LawwiIl, alt hough the rest o f th e " A me rican " team made it with Paul Smart slipping into I I tho Yvon DuHamel, 15th ; Gary Fish er , 18th, Kel Carruthers, 21st, and Ron Grant, 26 th (a fte r he experienced th e Suz u ki 75 0's first rod failure). Cliff Carr o n ly did a lap o r two each practice before his engine got munchy. He blew it up three times, o nl y go t half a d ozen laps of practice, and still qualified 3!lth. After his last seizure, he dis covered t hat his sp are cran k h ad the wrong size piston pin holes and seem e d ready to quit. Conspicuous by his absence was Worl d Ch amp Giacomo A go st ini wh o decid ed no t to ride th e un co mpetitive MV·6750. Everybody who started took home some Lira. T hey also had lap mo ney (for the first three places). Heat wi n money was paid for bo th rider and mechanic , and many other racing accomplishments we re also paid fo r. First 100 Mile Heat • They ca me to the grid for th e first heat at 2 P.M; Thousands upon thousands of spectators covered the hillsides and lined the track. It had been announced at riders ' m eeting (w here Yvon DuHamel go t hit by a car , but was only bruised) that it wasn ' t necessary to take the warm-up lap. That would be cri tic al for so me sin ce they co uld n ' t top up their gas afterwards. One lap might make the difference. Somebody didn 't hear this, h owever , and when J amo declined to take the lap be cause he didn 't want to warm up his engine whic h runs better when cool (h e had gas enough to go 15 0 miles), so mebody got u pset. A fist fight started, and Jamo decided that it wasn't worth it and too k t he lap. When th e flag fell to start th e race it was the Ka wasakis o f DuHam el and Baumann th at s treake d to th e fro nt alo ng with J arno's Yamah a. Just as te rn wer e Pa ul S ma rt and Cal Rayborn. The Ducati s of Bruno Kneub uhler an d Bruno Spaggiari were ne ar th e fro n t , to o . Spaggiari wanted to wi n very badl y' afte r second place las t year .
