We didn't enter expecting to win. It was onlyour second qualifier.
What we did want to see was how our machines woulddo
without engine modifications. Soexcept for someveryminorchanges we
entered standard bikes.
Our lightweight team consisted of 3"Rickman Six Day Enduros,
right out of the crate. Our riders were Jim Welch, Mike Hechtman and
Richard DeGraw, winner of a gold medal at Fort Hood the week before.
In the 251cc and overclass we had Ken Harvey, John Greenrose,
Frank Diaz and Dave Mengenast on 'Iriumph Trophy 'Irails. The'lliumphs
were the only four-stroke twins in the race. The rest of the field consisted of singles, nearly all of them 2-strokes. Specialized racing machines, tuned and
modified precisely for this kind of competition.
'Iriumph's entries were on/off road bikes. And we entered them
just to see how they would stack up against the others.
The conditions were tortuous. It rained all day Saturday. Sunday
was clear but the groundoozed with mud. There was high water all around
and the rocks presented an ominous.picture (when they could be seen
through the slop). Only94 of the 300 entries even finished.
But the three Rickmans took homesilvermedals. And three of
the four Triumphs took homegolds. Ken Harvey, the only silvermedalist
for 'Iriumph, is forgiven. He.won a goldat Fort Hood.
