Hare & Hound. T hi s was Mark 's first o vera JI win , an d as he said , "This is my best day, I co uld n 't do an yth ing wrong. I got lost a cou ple of times but fo und th e co urse righ t away , the b ike wo uldn' t run on low en d so I just ke pt it buzze d up an d every th ing turned ou t OK !" T he Sled Riders had their work cut out fo r th em, as they had to use th e sam e area t he In vaders used last wee k, with onl y a short ti me to wo rk on the co urse, take down last week's ribbon, etc. There was an enduro running on the other side of the hill . To say th e least, the desert is ge tt in g ti ght . A lot of the de sert 's h oes went to the Mint 400, so the b oys who staye d were having a ball. It w as really anyo ne 's race. We had n o id ea who was going to win a t the start. The ban ne r d ro ppe d at 10 :0 0 AM sh arp , and the battle was on between an Amate ur with a big n umber , J eff Kir k o n a Yamah a, Bill Bogn er (S uz), wit h Ad ent mo vin g up from sixth to third in the fir st three mile s. Kirk too k the lea d fro m the leading Amateur and we n ever fo und o u t who · he was. The n Bogner ch allenged him, and they wer e going wh eel -t o-wheel wh en Bogn er hit a ro ck an d le t th e oil o ut of hi s case . - Man of th e Hour A de n t ca ught Kirk ab o ut six miles o u t an d took over th e lead . Kir k said " Man , it wa s scary o ut there . I didn 't kn ow if I w as go ing too fas t or no t fast eno ugh . It 's a lonely feeling to be in the lead." T he first lo op was a fast, rou gh 36 mil es with lots of whoop-de- docs an d a lon g san dy do wnhill. T hey say that Ade nt j us t sho t do wn the hill with no traffic, b ombed through t he pits wit h about a tw o mi nute lead over Kir k. After Kirk came Bill Saltz man. Meanwhile , t he Novices were ge tt ing with it as th ey st art ed fifteen min u tes la ter an d, in all the d us t, we think No. 629X ha d the lead as they made the righ t t um in to th e sandwash.
