Some great ra cers, especially in year s past wh o were once National heroes in the d ays before th e money started com ing in , h ave ended up in pretty unhappy situations. But it seems that th e clubs are n ot going to reall y hang in there and ch ec k AMA car d s at runs. A District riding card is a must but th e AMA card, no. Some clubs will require th em so y ou'd b etter chec k in pretty carefully if yo u are riding with out an AMA car d so y o u d on't ge t turned awa y at sign-up. T he sp onso ri ng club will usually let you know on th eir poster o r call them up (ph on e number is usually in our cale ndar of events) as to wh ether th ey are go in g strictly by th e b o ok o r not. Tom and Cordis Brooks both got protested on engine displacement and Cordis is 98cc and Tom 128 (approx.) both well within th e limits. That is an e asy way to earn $ 10. Mitch Mayes also got protelted. He was ac cused of changing bikes h alf-wa y through the ra ce . Ed Farrell , district Referee was on hand, took on e look at th e two bikes and gave Mi tch the S 10. I though t th at if Mitch really h ad chang ed bikes that he ought t o go into business for himself. Anybody who could pull a st ic ky tank ca rd off th at fast without ripping it sh ould be able to make a lo t of money helping cl u bs at the fini sh lin e. Oh, well, opportunities lik e that are to o good to be true, a ren 't th ey . Speaking o f which , if y o u are go ing to protest another rider y ou b e ti er make su re y o u r 'skirts ar e clean . YOlI migh t just make somebody mad e n o ug h t to spill the beans on you ne xt time y ou cut co urse. Most riders hesitate to protest be cause : 1) they beat you anyway , so it doesn 't matter o r 2) yo u beat them and if the y protest it sounds like a sn ivel.
