Forme rl y, m ember cl u bs we re required to h old an AM A char te r, ge t AMA sa nc tions for th eir races, an d require all compe ti to rs' t o be m embe rs of th e AMA. R igh t n ow, it ap pears th at most of th e cl ubs wiII co n tin ue their cha r te rs , b u t that they will not see k race san ctions. As far as lo cal ride rs go , th is leaves the S RA somewhat straddling th e fen ce , be cause it is possib le th at some season point races will require m embershi p , and so me won 't. But to a maj o rity o f the board, co m p o sed of a represen ta tive fro m each club , the -two non-strad d ling alterna tives we re re p ugnant: i.c. to co n tin ue to require everyone to join; or to prohib it a memb e r clu b fro m getting an AMA san ction. The m aj o ri ty view was th a t the body can no longer justi fy re q ui ring a racer to join , in view o f the ra ise in m embershi p fees, and m o stl y in view o f th e ch ange in m edical ins u rance d ed uctible to S1,000, which man y vie w as no in surance at a ll. The min ority view, as represented b y th e Salt Lake Motorcycle Club, was that now, more th an ever, m otorcycling n eed s a unit ed s trong national o rganiza tio n , especially in th e area o f legisl ative lobbyin g o n suc h m atters as land use , no-fault in suran ce, helmet law s, e tc.
