With the d ay b reakin g wet and soggy, everyo ne was quite su rp rised when by ra ce-time, th e tr ack had im p ro ved vastly an d very fas t times were turned in b y so me of th e b etter riders, namely ' Dan T urn er , Duane Yarrow, and Bill McClinton. T hese riders w alk ed off with the Expert b rass in th eir resp ective 12 5, 250 and Open classes . Dan T urn er, wh o excels in th e mud, reall y pl eased th e spectato rs but gave th e scorekeepers fits, by lapping all but th e se cond pl ace Expert . o n this o ne-mi le track. The Junior Min i even t was won by Mark Va ughn who walked off with a t ro phy alm ost as tall as he is. Se nior min i honors wen t to Mike Lowater. Jack Kilgr oe copped t op honors in the 10 0 Novice class wh ile 125 Novice Firsts wen t t o Charles Loreman and Gary Davis. 125 Amateur honors we re t ake n by Mark J ohnson , wh o also rides well o n mud-sliced courses. 2 50 Novice laurels wer e ca p tu re d b y Scott Briard an d J ack Simmons in their respective Divisions, while J on Bo ye tte won a split decisio n fo r the 250 Amateur class. Open Novice wa s ca ptured by Daniel Cole and Bill McClin to n gra b be d a firs t in th e Open Amateu r. Buell Campbell, co-owner of Argy ll M.C. Par k, wo n th e Old Time r's Ra ce quite handily. Ii , 19i3 The dust appeared on the Indian Dunes International track after tw o weeks of rainy track condi t io ns, and AME saw fast racing as th e ra cers got plenty of traction on the straights with the t rac k being loose enough for them to sm oke the berms. Some of the closest and most competitive ' racing was in the 125 . Senior clas s where three very fas t ra cers kept at each other's side in all the co rn ers wh ich made passing almost impossible for them. No on e w as going to walk off wi th th e race . In th e first moto the even tual cash winner, Ri ck Hendrickson o n hi s Bultaco, got away from competit ors Will H arper (DKW) andJerry Fre kle too (Hod) . In m o ta twe things turned aro und and th is time Will Harper moved up t o firs t place wi th Freckleton and Hendrickson growling just feet behind Harper 's DKW . R apping things up after alot of h ard racin g Hendri ckson fin ally clinched the payback ch ec k for sure in th e th ird m o ta . Will Harper fini sh ed in sec ond . The 125 Junior ra ce wa s h ardl y a battle fo r Dave Krikac who won on a Bul ta co as h e w as alw ays a good straigh t ah ead of the rest. Tod ay it was esp ecially in te res ti ng watchi ng Mark just wh eelie ove r one straigh t of wa ter on the back wheel of his Husky. He was about th e o nly class winner th at didn't have plenty of com peti ti o n. Rick Brown on a Greeves from Nick Nicholson Motors was th e only other placing 5 0 0 Senior racer. He is super fast but couldn't find a way to give Blackwell a close race. In a class that had aro und tw enty st arters Jack Bla ckwell t ook ano ther Husky and won th e 500 Juniors over Michael DeHart (CZ) and Craig Newlan d (CZ) . Whil e the two Blackw ells - Mark and J ack both won th eir class, Greg Blackw ell (Hus) also di d great as he to o k seco nd place in a tough 12 5 In t ermediat e class b eh ind R obert Elliott (Man) who is as fas t as most of th e Sen io rs. . CZ , wh ich is b y far th e mo st successful racin g mach in e in th e AME , showed up in th e first three pl aces of th e 500 Intermediate class at Ra wh id e Park as winner Bob Dunsire smoked Danny Morgan an d Jerry Fol st ad. Dave Martinez (C Z) keep s ge tting fas ter and faste r in the 25 0 Junior class wh ere again today he to ok - firs t pl ace over Bob Gundry (Bul) and Gary Rei d on a Husky 25 0. While p rep aring th e course for " Super Course Day ", Mo to rsp o r ts ' Smi th uncovered several bikes that be came mudded in d urin g last week ' s water skiing c o n te st. The crowd th at gathered to wa tch th e Ex pert race stood in shock as th ey saw th at the new 25 0 Honda Elsin ore 2-st ro ke can do ! T he Open and 250 Ex pert/In termediate classes were ru n tog ether b ut scored separately. With six O pen b i kes a n d f ou rt een 250 c o m pe t i t o r s , D a v e K olbe (Han tw o-st roke) in th e firs t Ex pe rt mota moved up from si xth over th e start hill t o second Expert at th e firs t m o t o checkere d. (T h is means he was in fron t of five big bore mach ines.) During the second Expert mota he wen t from ninth at lap o ne to se con d at the finis h an d in the third mo t a , fro m fifth to seco nd! The winner of all th ree m o t e s was smooth Tracy Oswell on a Co le Brothers 400 Mai co . Oswell see ms to always pick a good lin e an d rides very fast and steadil y at Baymare . Bill Kell y , o n a n ew fast 400 C Z from Hueneme Cycles (his sponso r) , w on all th ree o f the Open In termediate mo tos for a first overall. Kell y recen tly moved fr om Hu sk y to CZ ' after riding the Swedish bomb for two ye ars. While we're o n the Exp ert events, a mention is n ecess ary for Dave Kolbe again. Seem s he raced in th e 125 class also and won it with two firs ts an d a secon d. Although th e even ts were sh ortened due to so me un expected b ad weather, th er e w as so me good racing alon g with some runaw ays. In 125 action, Steve Watm o re (Hus), bested th e Novices. Chris Mosley (D KW) had to se ttle for second overall behi nd Mark Sassong (Suz) after Ch ris p u t on a fin e ride in the fi rst ·Amateur mo to, Ken Zahrt (DKW) ran o ff and hi d from the Experts fo r a clean sweep. Ken was turning lap times j ust a few seconds off of the O pen class times. T he 25 0 crossers pu t on th eir us ual di spl ay of go fas t and daring with number on e Novice goi ng to Dou g Wrigh t (Ma i). In Amate ur action Lee N oblitt (S uz) (who has been win ning th is class const an tly ) fough t off Glen Train er who was out on a new Salem 's Motorcycle In c. five speed CZ. Rick Eirs tedt led th e Maico p ar ad e in th e 25 0 Ex p er t race with Gayl on Mosier an d Arizona's Chu ck Lampe right on hi s heel s. . Steve Strasser (Yam ) was fir st under the ch ec ker in the Open Novi ce class and J . Mangum (Ma i) to ok fir st in the Am ateur divi sion . And then came th e Ex per ts. Or sho uld I say Staten then th e Experts. From th e firs t lap he wo uld gra p a h uge lead and st retch it wi th th e rest of the p ack struggling to keep him in sight . Staten kep t the fan s in awe w ith his cro ssed u p leaps o ff of the 60 foot "cliff". He is a real showman. The Arizona Sidehack As sociation put on a four-lap exhibition with one of the. hacks (So rry , I didn ' t ge t yo ur n ames) cras hing on the " cli ff. " It lo o ked like the driver was hu rt bad ly after the rig bounced o ver him , b ut he jumped up af ter a few min ut es, raising his hand s ove r h is head to th ch eers of th e cro wd .
