Doutt CASTLE ROCK, WASH ., June 3 . 19 72 - It was an action packed nigh t with thrills, spills and wheel-to-wheel dueling all the way at the Castle Rock Fair Grounds tonigh t. Ch uck Joyner was plagued with problems all nigh t as he first took the lead in th e first Expert h eat and had it all tied up for first when his clutch cable snapped on the front straightaway and he w ent sailing into the hay bales in the south tum . He w alked aw ay unhurt. J oe Herndon to ok over the lead then Dick Waller turned it o n and j etted into first with Thad Lawrence fin ishing second. It was a tw o wa b attle b etween Darrell Cotton and Ike Reed (T ri) all the way with Cotton taking his Norton across the finish for first with Reed in a very close second . As Dick Washer grabbed th e lead in the fourth heat , four riders went down in the righ t-hander and the race was stopped. On th e re start Sonny Bu rres grabbed the lead , this time with T .L . Hoglan right behind h im , giving Burres some anxious moments for a co uple of laps. Burres be gan to op en up a lead and crossed th e finish lin e first. The fo urth and final heat ra ce saw some very anxious riders as all but Pa t Marinacci and Mike Hannula fo und th em selve s in th e b ack ro w. Marinacci gra bbe d th e lead with Han n ula second and Mike Elder th ird . J im J ones passed seve n riders including Hannula an d Elder to take over second p lace. Han nul a dropped back to give Elder third. Jones began pressing Marinacci hard working o n him all the way, b u t Mar inacci held hi m off to cross the finis h just in ch es in front. Ra ndy Scott won th e first Expert Semi. as Joyne r took second and Washe r th ird to transfer to the Mai n . Gary Brown won the second Semi, with Roger Stanley in second and Mike Hannula third. Randy Skiver h ad worked up to fo urth from a back row sta rt, but it j u st wasn' t go od en ough to ~" ~~ .~ "' ''Jl\\ V'r... . "" transfer. Son ny Burres grabbed the lead in the Ex pe rt Main wi th Pat Mari nacci in second. Coming in to the south tum on the second lap , four riders piled into the hay bales, causing the race to be stopped. On th e restart, Burres again too k the lead as Marinacci too k second. Marinacci go t a little lo ose co ming ou t of th e n o rth turn an d Burres gaine d gro un d to stretch o u t hi s lead . Burres took i t all the way to finish first wi th J ones driving on Marinacci and ta king over second and Marinacci finishing third. Ike Reed p laced fourth and Thad Lawrence fifth . Sonny Burres took th e lead in the Expert Trophy Dash and went all the way to tak e th e Trophy h ome to Oregon with him. Marinacci finished second, Dick Waller third and Cotton fourth. Steve Baker to ok the Junior Trophy Dash, bu t not by a very large margin as J im Einarsson kep t p ressing him try ing to get a drive to go aro und. Einarsson finished in second, Sam Mar tin th ird an d Ro n O lson fo urth. The first Ju n io r heat was won by J im Einarsson. Ron Olson took the second heat. Sam Martin jumped into the lead in the third heat with J erry Whitlow righ t behind. Martin missed a shift cau sing \Vh itio w to run into his rear wheel. Whitlow did a fantastic job of riding as he kept his Triumph upright an d went arou nd to fin d a soft spot to lay down in. Martin we n t on to win the heat. Th e fo urth h ea t was won by Stev e Baker. Bob Davis took h is Maico around to win th e first Junio r Semi, an d Brack enbury won the second Sem i. S teve Baker held the lead fo r alm ost all th e J unio r Main with J im Einarsson righ t th ere waiting for Baker to m ake a slip. Whe n he did , Einarsson swooped under h im and went on, taking hi s Harley around to win with Baker in second and Martin third. Ricky Graves took the lead in the Novice Main and stayed in front all the way to win. Larry Marchant he ld second u ntil the last lap when he went out and Don Dodge moved up into second. Sanders,.Ooty Square Off Gillespie Gets It GARD ENA, CAL., June 9 , 1972 Dave Aldana saw his ch ances a t building up an even more enviab le streak here a t Ascot fly (o r flu , as th e case may be) out th e window as h e be cam e very ill prior to goi ng o ut for p rac t ice . With Dave o ut, th e scram ble fo r th e win so on narrowed down to Frank Gillespie , J ody Nicholas and Lloyd Houchins. Gillespie , second fast est qualifier, made a last-lap bid in his h eat to ad van ce directly to the Main. J od y , however, h ad to play it rough by losing the lead in his he at to Chuck Thelke . This d rop p ed him in to th e Semi wh ere Mik e Haney did h im in. In the Main , Gille spie go t to th e nose earl y in lap one an d had to b attle off Houchins. The pace was hard and soon Lloyd be gan fallin g beh ind with Mel Lacher on h is tail. Nip and tu ck, Jady worked fro m fi fth o n lap o ne , to fo urth the next, and even tu ally in to sec on d in th e closing stages. But th e lead w as to o great an d Gill espie rolled away with it. H ouc h ins w as third, Lach er fo urth wi th Haney and DeWayne Keete r next. Tom Horton and Larry Gin o h ad a t it in t he J u nio r Main an d a fter a h ard race, Horton sq ueaked out the win with Ron Powell third. Rick Hocking dominated th e Novice ranks wh ich saw a terrific duel between Randy Bailey and Dan Hockie for second. Bailey p ulled away in th e final few lap s to win th at h assle . By Art Lo ya SOUT H G ATE , CAL., June I , 1972 Lik e McG overn an d Humphrey, Bob Sanders and Tom Doty ca rr ied their p op ular tr ack b attles in to the 125 5 0-lap IT Main in an event eq u iva lent to the Cali fornia primary . Th e tw o p opular lead in g ride rs, in a ba ttle ro yal that was not de cided until the final lap of th e 5 0-lap per when Sander s toured the circu it holding th e choke with on e hand and guiding his Kawasaki with the o th er to take the chec kered flag ahead of a fast closing Doty aboard h is Honda. Th e third of a series of 100-125 Cham p ionsh ip IT events drew a fiel d of ~ 1 8 riders to the starting line . Crecelius wasted no ti me in ta king an eary lead ahead of Dave Luja n (Kaw), Sanders, Vern Maxwell (Bul), Wiley Miller (Kaw), • and Allen Swett (Hon) . On the third lap , Sanders passed Lujan for second, and three laps later, Lujan lost his poise while trying too hard to ca tc h Sanders and spilled as he at tempted to make his move goi ng in to the back straigh t, On the seventh lap as both Crecelius an d S an d ers started to lap slower riders, Sanders grabbed the lea d to stay while Do ty was movin g to fifth ahead of Miller. On the tenth lap, Doty seeking to keep Sanders within raci ng distance moved fro m fifth to third ahead of Maxwell, an d by the 19th lap , out-raced Cre celius for second spo t. At th e ch ec kered, it was Sanders outlastin g Doty as Maxwell chased th e pair across the finish line for th ird ahead of Cr ecelius, Sw ett and Miller. Dan Co rbett, after co ming o u t o f a long w inless streak last week by winning both 250 Mains, sh owed the fans th at his wins were n o flu kes as he m oved to an early lead on the first lap of the IT Main in a 10-rider field . Going in to the sec ond lap , Corbett lost con tro l of th e gro ove and swep t hi gh into th e lo ose stu ff allowi ng Ric k Goade (Bul) ' to take the lead . Savin g second sp o t, Co rbett an d his Bultaco, con tin ue d to ride herd on Goade , and on lap three, it was Goade wh o mad e h is error com ing off the seco nd jump by swinging wide to enter th e backstre tch, th is time allo wing Co rbett to make his move low and regain the lead . At th e checkered , it was Corbett over while B ellflow er G o ade, Triumph-sp onsored, Les Bomar w on the Junior class ah ead of Ron Byar (Oss ), Jim Vester (Ge ne Romero's Bike Jazz-Bu l), and T erry Griner (Bul). In the 250 FT Main, Corbett displayed an overeagerness by jumping st arter Don Petro and was penalized to the back row. Despite his han dicap , Corbett came through to grab third on lap o ne, and second on lap two, bu t failed to catch Goade all the way to the ch eckered . Bomar made it two straigh t wi ns in th e Junio r division by beating Jesse "The Bandit" J ames, and Griner (Bu l) in the 250 FT Main. Sanders and Crecelius shared top win ning honors as Sanders went on to win the 3-lap 125 IT Trophy Dash over a G-rider field, while Crecelius did his thing in winning the 100 FT Main over Miller and Mik e Mining (Hod) . Williams ' CLACKAMAS, ORE., May 26 , 1972 Gary Scott (T ri) co llected th e lion 's share of the $I 500 purse to nigh t as h e clocked in with fast time and wo n each of h is events. T he Juniors had problems in th e Trophy Dash. James Crensh aw (No r) had won his heat but caught fire as he came to the line fo r the dash. The fire was put ou t, and so w as James for the nigh t. An altern ate, J erry Lambert , had machine tr ouble . An o th er altern ate, Keith Dunn (T ri) , allo wed the dash to be st arted . Keith 's bike failed shortly .. an d he didn't fin ish. Neal Hulet (Tri) '. , . finally won . The Main was Ro n Olson 's.'(Tri) all th e way. Hulet and Gre g Johnson (Tri) t ried h ard but could n ' t ca tch Ron . T h ree a r th e four No vice T roph y Dashers fell leavin g Rick y G raves (Bul) a cle ar win , an d h e came b ack for a repeat in the Main . (Results on page 48 )
