Photos by Andre Ney By Tom Blattler CHULA VISTA , CAL ., June 4 , 1972 After protesting th e finish of th e ra ce because he believed the scoring ch ar ts were in correct, San Diego's Kev in Stafford was declared th e winner of th e first annual Jim Brockman Memorial 100-lap TT race o n one of the fastest TT courses in th e United States , South Bay Sp eedway. Staf ford sta te d that he tho ught he should h ave been given the checkered flag on the final lap o f the fe a tu re rather than Sal Peluso of San Diego. Stafford h ad fallen o n the 100th lap, and Pel us o was th e do nor o f the ch ec kered flag , but the scorers rechecked th e lap charts and found that Stafford had a one lap lead over Peluso. So Sal -rece ived the checkered flag, but S tafford, aft er falling, go t b ack o n hi s 250 Pacifi c Yam ah a an d fin ished the final lap to make him the winner. Imperia l Beach Yamaha presented Stafford with $ 25 0 _for his first p lace fin ish. Pelu so , aboard a Don V esco Yamaha, was the second place fini sher , with Imperial Beach's Marc Barbani taking his Imperial Beach Yamaha to the thi rd position in the 75 -mile even t. Ascot Par k sta r Dave Aldana ch allenged Collie for the lead early and t o o k th e number one spot several times o nly to h ave Collie com e b ack and pass hi m on th e front straightaway. On lap 13 , Aldana attempted to pass Larry in th e first tum, but got too hi gh an d had to lay h is b ike d own wh ich put him out o f the c ontest.
