It's about 184 m iles long an d, on a map , it appears as a very jagged loop with a lo ngish tail extending in to McMinnville. The start is at th e fairgrounds and th e rider s go righ t up the town 's m ain street and through a pretty resi dential section on their way to and fro m the mo untains. Asphalt road soon turns to pea gravel whic h tu rns into tight trail overgrown with face -slapping trees an d brush. A lt hough the trail is slo w, th e asphalt st retch allowed most of th e riders to get way ahead of schedule , an d at th e firs t check wer e sti ll far ah ead. T h e second sectio n h as q u ite a b it of mu d in a Jogged-over area including one huge mud hole th at throughly trap pe d seve ra l unwarv compe ti to rs. Would you believe mud up to th e gas tan k ?! Section 3 w as all t rails and little used , or abando ne d road . The riders got a rest on the next sec tio n which was entirely ' fire road s, but still quite rough an d very trick y. It was on this section on Sunday that I took an unau th orized trail o ff to the side of the road. I broke my co lla rbone wh en I rej oined th e road - w ith o u t my scooter- at abou t 4 0 per. Sec tion 5 was the roughest both d ay s. On Saturday it occurred in th e middle of the afternoon . It had become un comfortably hot an d th is section had fe w shading tre es. T wo steep , very difficu lt h ills came in quick succession an d virtual ly no o ne go t up wit ho ut push ing, as me dals tu rn ed from Gold to Silver to Bro n ze and van ished in a h aze of swe at, b urning ru bber , an d profan ity. On Su nday , we wen t down the hill s I I Dan cKinney- beat 1,069 guys at Elsinore. I bu t a special c ross country te s t was include d an d righ t in th e middle of th e special tes t w as a giant cree k was hou t, with a muddy b o ttom an d ne arly vertical w all to climb o ut on th e o th er side. Gr eat fu n for Englis h Trials ri ders. The last section wen t back into heavy fores ts and very, ver y tight trails with m ud, logs. rocks, an d trees 28 in ches apart. Most ride rs agreed tha t it was the ne at est trail of th e day . Sund ay we did th e co urse b ackward s. T he Motorcycl e Activi ties Clubs of McMinnville hosted th e even t an d th e co nse nsus w as th at th ey h ad d on e a fin e job in m ost areas . T heir rel ative ine xp erien ce sh owed in th e trail mar kings which ca use d fas t riders to overshoot or misturn much too often . Although there were plenty of arrows, they were too sma ll and were o ften placed to o cl ose to th e tum . Having th e event in their backy ard , so to sp eak , is e ncouraging rid ers in the McMinnville area to try t rial s an d seve ral good ride rs are de velopi ng . Gene Magn ess and Frank Gunn ess, bo th o n Ho ndas and b oth fro m the town to ok Bro nze me dals with ide n tical scores (.3 9 eac h) , while Tom Eri ch so n, sponsored by Sports Center . earned a Gold ~I e dal . The next round of the qu alifying tr ials will be th e Bad Rock in Eas tern Oregon. June 10 an d II. O fficial results ne x t w ee k. Dan finished 21st overall and ' 8th in his class.
