McMINNVILLE, o-e., June 3-4,1972 The first of three qualifying rounds for
the 1973 ISDT to be held in the wes tern
region o f the U.S. was run this weekend
in th e moun tainous area west o f
McMinnville.
The co mp e ti t ion for the most
important prize, the Trade Team
Troph y , though, was a co n test between
rival Eastern teams. Alth ough at th is
time scoring is n ot co mp leted , it looks
as th ou gh th e Penton East Team (Dick
Burleson , Tom Penton and Doug
Wilford) will win b y a slender margin,
w ith
a sco re of 3 gol ds an d
ap p ro ximately 4 ,629 bonus poin ts.
Os sa's top team (Dave Latham, Do n
Cuttler, and Ch arlie Vincent) are second
with 3 go lds an d 4, 554 b onus p oints.
These are just to ta l bonus p oin t sco res .
T he actual scoring sys te m is much more
co mplicated, bu t since th e appare n~
winning team 'was riding the smaller
bike , the mo re co m plica ted sys te m is
u n likely to change any thing.
In the Clu b Team co mp e ti tion ,
Weste rne rs did a bi t better with th ree
members o f th e Richmond (Cal ifo rnia)
Rambler s M.C. - Fra nk Diaz (Yam) , Ed
Sh aidell (BSA), and Gary Greiner (Bul)
- tak ing go ld medal s.
Approximately 39 riders will win
co ve ted gold medals fo r individual
performance . Most of th em, as might be
expected, already have a national
reputation. Many Cal ifornians are
among the gold medal winners,
including Gene Cannadv. Lars Larsson,
Tom Patton, Bob Steffan " d Steve
an
Hurd. There were 237 entries, but all of
them did not appear in the impound
area. Ab out 18 0 actually started.
Approximately 15 silver medals will be
awarded. Top en d uro rid er Dave Ekins
appears to be a silver medal winner.
Bruce Brown , direc tor of "On Any
Sunday" will be o ne of abou t 15 ri ders
to win bronze medals.
Almost 4 0% o f the en tran Is in the
" Two-day Trial " received medals which
is unusually high. Two significan t factors
wer e th e absolutely pe rfect weather
co nditio ns an d the re la tive ly lo w
nu mbe r of inexperienced riders. Many
of th e better riders including Lars
La rsson, Doug Wilford, an d Preston
Petty th ou gh t the sche dule speeds (22
m iles per h our on S atu rday , 24 o n
Sunday) were to o lo w. Wilfo rd thought
th at 30 mil es per h ou r for an "A"
sched ule wou ld h ave be en app ro priate .
