WASH .• ~ I a y 27, 19 i 2 - Opening nigh t of professional racing at Castle Rock proved to be an exciting night for racing with many of the top riders from \I"ashington, California and Oregon showing up. There were five Expert heats with Chuck Joyner taking the first, Sonny Burres in second place . T . L. Hogland rode his Konon across the finish to take first in the second heat with Thad Lawrence second. Jim Jones won the third heat and Ike Reed placed second. T he fourth heat was w on by Randy Scott from Oregon , with Dick Waller coming in second. Terry Dorsch took the lead in the fifth and final heat wi th Gary Scott in hot pursuit. The Novice Trophy Dash was a real b attle as first Watte rson takes the lead , th en Scott t oo k over in th e righ t han der , holding Watterson off to take first with Watterson second and Dodge thi rd. T he J un ior Main got under way. Sam ~Iarti n sh ooting out into the lead with Ron O lson second, Jim Einarsson th ird and J . Crenshaw fourth. Einarsson jets under Ols on to take over second an d begins working on Marrin. Olson sta rts dropping off the pace and Bob Cooper drives under to take over fo urt h with Crenshaw moving up to th ird . Einarsson stretched out his lead after passing Martin , and Crenshaw was ab le to drive under Martin to take over seco nd . Einarsson rode his Harley. .across the line to take first with Cre nsh aw second . It was a wheel to wheel battle fo r first in the Novice Main between Bim Watterson an d Hen ry Scott wi th Watterson holding Scott o ff to go o n fo r the win . Holbroclc Takes Shot at Experts By James Brammer VALLEJO , CA L., May 26, 19 7 2 Un til th e final lap when Expert Mark mith p assed to win, Junior classed - rider Luther Holbrook led a star-filled pack o f Experts in a combined 125 Jun ior.Expert final in the V allej o scrambles. Ted David son Pen ton -moun ted fin ished third behind Ho lbrook on a Honda while winner Smi th w as DKtv-m o unte d . A sp ill o n th e sta rting lap of the 500 Junior final took down five riders with Je rry Ston ebraker getting the har d es t fal l. Am bulance attendants carried Stone braker off the track, but sin ce th ey did not leave the track wi th the ambu lance . ap paren tly t his injur ies are minor. O n th e restart o f th e 500 Jun ior fina l, Jean McFarland won by working his wa y up from fourth posi tion in the ea rly laps . Butch Davidson ran over downed Allen Ya rrow's hike in the opening laps o f the 250 Expert final also falling off while black plate rider Alex Jorgensen from S tock lon gave chase to winner Larry Drew. Jorgensen 's ch ase gave seri ou s threat to Drew's dominance of the class . .Jorgensen on a 65 0 BSA easily won in the 500·650 Exp ert class. Drew and Bill Calicura finishin g secon d and th ird on 500 BSAs. Track condi tions were smoo th and tacky , but ex cessive sp ills occu rre d with most happen in g a t high spe ed wh en rid ers a ttempted to brake coming off the sweeper corner on the south end to en ter the infield co urse . May 19 , 19 72 - Ken He lling is b ack in his old winning style a t th e Vallej o scrambles. The o vera ll track point cham p io n fo r the 19 7 1 seaso n regulated all th e new upstarts in the 65 0 Expert class by a resp ec tabl e d istance as he b las ted ar ound the TT scram b les trac k at Vallej o to victo ry by a wide margin. Th e previou s we ek' s w inner, Larry Drew again o n the Cycle West BSA 500 MX h ad tr o ub le getting aro und Phil - 'Anderso n and Mik e Kalamaras who were runnin g side hy side in th ird. Even tually , Drew p ar ted the two an d then p assed Ander son to finish th ird beh ind J im Saitone. In th e 250 Exp er t fin al. Kalamaras ... again h ad a tough b attle fo r third ; th is tim e h e lost to a rid er numbered 27C. Drew on th e O ssa won the 250 class with Ron Kesler finishin g second. The 5 0 0 ovice final was close with th ree leaders crossin g th e jump together and three of the early hopeful finishers d rop p in g au t as J oh n T avis gained second and fred Dol cin i gained third behind winner Jim ambo . Only seven riders h ave ever co nq uere d this hill an d o n ly one man has seen th e to p tw ice. T his year m o ist soil provided u n precedented traction and five mach ines successfu lly asce nded the slo pe with Francis Balcerzak of Helen a. Montana beco mi ng the on ly man on a 500cc class machine to ever win th is honor.
