MUD AND CASTROl
By Carol Witt
\\lCHITA, KANS., May 7, 1972 Nin ety-eight riders signed up for the
Castr o] 60 0, spon sored by th e local
Cast ro I de aler, Art Distributing. despite
the heavy rai n we received Satu rd ay.
We've heard several detrimental remar ks
about th e Kan sas dust, but I for one
w ould have welcomed a little dust
tod ay. Water was standing in holes on
the tr ack , and certain areas of mud on
the track was of the con sistency of wet
cernen t, making th is more of an
end urance race than a speed race.
In the 125 Novice class. Jim Beeb e,
wh o rid es a Yamaha, came back for th e
secon d t ime to o ur track (also his
second time to ra ce) and took first for
th e day. Edward Klein, on a Penton
took secon d, and third went to Th ad
Davis ridin g a Yamah a.
T he 12 5 Exp ert class h ad 15 riders,
all o u t for the money. J ohn Thurst on,
riding a Suzuki took first in all th ree ,
rn o tos, but had a close ca ll on th e
sec ond m o to . Mist ak ing the las t lap flag
fo r the checkere d flag (m ud was flyin g
eve ry where), h e p ulled off th e trac k and
into th e parking lot b efore a spectator
fina lly go t h is a tt ention and told him he
had o ne mo re lap to go . Back on to th e
track he raced, and arou nd one more
time and then go t hi s che ckered flag fo r
first place. Not on ly wi ll th is b e a d ay
Thurston will re me mber " flag-wise" ,
b ut he also got hit by a low -flying duck.
Ye s, a low-Flying duck . It re ally
happen ed. Despite all the handicaps , h e
still made it in a good quarter -lap ah ead
o f Mark Herrington, second place man.
Herrington rides two clas ses, 125 plus
th e 250 o n a CZ. His comment was "We
d on't have mud like this in Texas."
.T hird place went to David Dixon, on a
Yamaha.
In the 250 Expert class. 17 riders
started out the rubber band. Mark
Herrington got off first, Gary Witt,
second, and Bill Blair, third. By the
third lap Witt's cycle had be c ome
thoroughly water-logged and he had
dropped
ba ck
to
fourth.
Rob
Knoettgen, on a CZ, had taken the lead
with Herrington se cond and Blair third.
The
riders

Witt and Knoettgen fough t furiously
back an d forth, un til the final mu d hole
as Witt slid sideways and Knoettgen
cen terpunch ed him. Knoe ttgen was up
and off. rand got back in first within two
