Arnaiz, !ordy Duel at Lo By A nn Carr LOD!, CA LIF., May 13,1972 - Second week Expert Arnaiz and Alex Jorgensen continued th eir dom ination of the 250 class a t Lodi as they finished first and second in the 250 Expert Main. A Iter second and first place finishes in the heats , their super-fast Kawasaki> (referred to by so me motorcycle mags as "Il l-handl ing"} raced into the lead on the first lap as you ng Arnaiz-though a bit' skittish in the turns-held off intense pressure from Jorgy, Jerry Kole and Jeff Davidson, for a wire to wire win. J orgy grabbed a second and Kole a third when Jeff fell on the white nag lap . These two fast Kawasaki-mounted Dring, Stewart Tie By Jim Shipley REDOING , CAL., May 14 , 1972 Perhaps d ue to Mothers ' Day, there were on ly 150 sign-ups at a tr ack that usually draws twice that many . T here were no Trophy Dashes, but Fred Rabo won the wheelie con test. Main, In th e 125 Novice Su zuki-mounted Dan Firsbee grabbed an earl y le ad with Jeff Shimizu in second h olding o ff Ray Douglas . Douglas made it aro und them all to tak e first. The 12 5 Am/Ex Was a race to the finish as Fred Rabo grabbed fi rst fr om R on Sco tt in th e final seconds. J eff Ge ist , racin g for th e first time as an Amateur on th e o nly 17 5 in th e 200 Am/Ex. class man aged t o walk off wi th a firs t p lace . Bru ce Edwards grabbed an early lead in th e 250 Novice when hi s bike slid out in the firs t tum , k nocking down two other b ikes leaving Mo n tesa-rno un ted R uda in th e lead un til he was p assed by Chu ck Locket t an d then Joe Cantor. Con tinually being challenged in the 500 E xp ert class was Bultaco-mounted win ner , Mart in Plumb . Ha rry Dri ng was in second. All Open clas ses were run to gether; Novices start ed in th e b ack . T he race fo r firs t lasted fro m start t o fin ish wi th Ch ar ies Stewart h olding the lead ove r Dring . T he finish was so cl ose that aft er Dring had a talk with th e o ffi cials, it w as ca lled a tie. Three length s back from th e leaders w as Mark Legarra, I • I Experts m u st mak e believers o ut of a few handling scoffers. Lodi is convinced afte r their showing over the past six weeks. Little Mik e Rizzuto, also b ecoming a trophy time regular a t Lodi , scre amed in to first on lap o ne of the 100 Novice Main and Was never headed. In the 125 Novi ce Main, Mike Prest o n 's Suzuki slipped through traffi c as he gained four positions in six lap s to take first. Bob Casey fini shed second . Young Joe Klein powered in to th e lead in the 250 Junior Main and was never headed. Dave Burton, R oger Horton, Ron Boley and Ron Chesney ch ased J oe all the way but co uld never ca tch up . Dave h ad to concentrat e o n keeping his Kaw (ano ther one!) ah ead of the Bu t herd fo r a second. Shorttrack is scheduled at Lodi for June 10, before regular Friday scrambles begin June 16 . He glimpsed two riders wobbling as they ap proac h ed the jump and when he crossed they were down in his path . R obinson hit them and then Kent Johnson hit Robinson . Allen Yarrow said h e was one of the lead rid ers wh o go t to gether, and he didn't know what had h appened oth er than he Was wobbling as he approached th e jump. It wa s he and either Mark Dunaway or Rich Alquist wh o were th e first two riders d own , th en Robinson. Ken t Johnson was th e nex t man over and he hit Robinson , but didn't fall. Larry Drew took the lead from Harry Dring in the closing laps to win. Dring had won the second heat. Mark Dunaway, first , and Mike Kalamaras had won over Drew in th e first heat. The track w as dry and slip pery which con tr ibu ted to man y other sp ills in o ther ra ces. Cycle West wh o sp onsors Drew on the Oss a cam e ac ross with a MX 500 BSA for the 5 0 0 class. The 500's were com b ined with th e 650's in the Expert class. It is ex tremely rare fo r a 500 to beat the 650' s a t Vallejo, but it should be a good w ay to h old a sp onsor. Drew jumped o ut fro n t from the start an d ran away from th e 650's on the slippery infield to win the fin al.
