All three of these ride rs were o n th e ground a t one time o r another and Williams had restarted his machine, whi ch caused all th e knitted brows. Kurt Lewis pi cked up the win in th e Handicap Main , wh ich mad e it five fo r five in this even t here - five sepa ra te winner s in five me et s. Guy Waterson led th e parade in the Handicap C onsy , chased by Dan n y Becker . Bailey PHOENIX, A RIZ., May 19 , 197 2 - J oe Henry of Sacramento, was a ru na wa y winner in Arizona's first indoor motorcycle race a t Ve terans' Mem ori al Coliseum. A crowd of 6,000 wa tc he d Hen ry flin g his Bul taco aro und the o ne-ten th mile track to take wins in h is hea t, the second Semi, the Trophy Dash an d th e Main Event. Fo r his win Henry car te d h ome S 1,124 a nd a big silver "Challenge Cup". Race favorite, Steve Hernandez , had a d isappointin g evenin g after he finished second in the first Semi-Main and last in the Main wh en his bike quit. His problems b egan in the first heat when he hit ano ther bike going into the first tum o n lap one. The result was one mas sive pil e up with Hernandez on the bottom. None of th e riders were inj ured but Hern andcz co uld n ' t regain his fo rm after the spi ll. The even ing e nded in near disaster when th e motorcycle jumping team of Bob Du ffey an d Dick Stone, both of Ph oenix, attemp ted several short di st ance ramp-to -ramp leaps. Th e d uo h ad accomplished two jumps wh en th ey decided to try an end-to-end tandem st un t . Both riders made it over th e gap , but Stone's b ike skidded o n the lan din g ramp an d he lost co n t ro l of his bik e nearin g the building exit. He slammed into a d oor partition and then slid out th e e xit in to the parking lo t. li e was ad m inis te red oxygen at th e scene a nd was taken to a Ph oen ix hospital where he was fou nd to have a bro ken clavicle an d o the r m in o r injuries.
