T he F rench Gr an d Prix is thi s weekend only 100 mil es west of our ~ w Z W ..J U > U Dear AMXT fo llowers, With the Italian G ran d Prix cancelled last week, we were ab le to land a small international event for both Mark and Bob ne ar Na ncy, France. Accordi ng to the Englis h riders also at this race, ou r boy s merely played a game of tag behi nd Pierre Karsma kers. The only tro ub le th ey enco un tered came from eac h o the r. Mark zap pe d up second p lace with Bob a few feet behind in th ird . Really a great show for the American flag! They thoroughly surprised the promoters who h ad only seen one American ride, and that was Hoppy Hopkins years ago . After the race they drove on to Sw ed en fo r the th ird round of the GP se ries. Meanwhile j ust when Bryan was beginning to get it together "o n the Maico , he rode an in tem ationl event near Rouen and broke the third finge r on his thro ttle han d. It was during the first lap of the first moto that he caught a metal p icket marking the track with h is brake lever. Instead of putt in g h is wh ole forearm in a cas t fo r a mo nth as the doctor suggested, Bry an fa b ricated his own race pro tection . DiffBr ake came in h andy: with th e b rak e system adjusted , h e wo uld o nly h ave to grip the throttle with h is right hand. The ' in valid bike' as we fo nd ly nam ed it, draw s quite a crowd . Ame ric an ingen uity h as always fascinated the French, and this differe n tia l bra kin g sys te m was some thing ne w. A m id -week international event gave Bryan a chance to try ou t his new system . Unfortu nately, th e course was rough and too much to han dle with a bound up h an d. We forfeited the ride to ano ther American, J ohn Barclay, who put in a steady ride and picked up so me extra cash. Ano the r try Sunday a t Gaillefo n taine and ano the r rough trac k. There were no record-bre aking re su lts . bu t enough AMXT outpost. Bryan hopes to try to finish the even t despite hi s hand. Bob and Mar k sh o uld be j oining us here in Connerre so we ca n all se t sail to gether fo r the track. Th ey will probably return stateside so on fo r the summer serie s and be back in Europe in Augu st for th e last few GP's. Sure wis h you'd blo w some sunny weather this way.
