Like a hungry pa ck of greyhounds afte r a h arri ed hare, th e 250 Expe rt troops pursued Jim Draper (Mo n) over hill an d dale all afternoon , never quit e ca tc h ing their prey. Fighting it ou t on every curve and straigh t, Paul Rice (Yam ) and Roy Vela squez (CZ) flew through the fin ish second and third. Moab, Utah 's Rio Algo m en try, Peter Harvey, b ossed his b ig an d brawny 500 Beezer around th e b umpy berms, taking thi rd place m o ney b ac k h om e to the colorful canyonlan d co un try. We've heard several detrimental remar ks about th e Kan sas dust, but I for one w ould have welcomed a little dust tod ay. Water was standing in holes on the tr ack , and certain areas of mud on the track was of the con sistency of wet cernen t, making th is more of an end urance race than a speed race. In the 125 Novice class. Jim Beeb e, wh o rid es a Yamaha, came back for th e secon d t ime to o ur track (also his second time to ra ce) and took first for th e day. Edward Klein, on a Penton took secon d, and third went to Th ad Davis ridin g a Yamah a. T he 12 5 Exp ert class h ad 15 riders, all o u t for the money. J ohn Thurst on, riding a Suzuki took first in all th ree , rn o tos, but had a close ca ll on th e sec ond m o to . Mist ak ing the las t lap flag fo r the checkere d flag (m ud was flyin g eve ry where), h e p ulled off th e trac k and into th e parking lot b efore a spectator fina lly go t h is a tt ention and told him he had o ne mo re lap to go . Back on to th e track he raced, and arou nd one more time and then go t hi s che ckered flag fo r first place. Not on ly wi ll th is b e a d ay Thurston will re me mber " flag-wise" , b ut he also got hit by a low -flying duck. Ye s, a low-Flying duck . It re ally happen ed. Despite all the handicaps , h e still made it in a good quarter -lap ah ead o f Mark Herrington, second place man. Herrington rides two clas ses, 125 plus th e 250 o n a CZ. His comment was "We d on't have mud like this in Texas." .T hird place went to David Dixon, on a Yamaha. In the 250 Expert class. 17 riders started out the rubber band. Mark Herrington got off first, Gary Witt, second, and Bill Blair, third. By the third lap Witt's cycle had be c ome thoroughly water-logged and he had dropped ba ck to fourth. Rob Knoettgen, on a CZ, had taken the lead with Herrington se cond and Blair third. The riders h eld these positions throughout the ra ce . In the third mota, Witt and Knoettgen fough t furiously back an d forth, un til the final mu d hole as Witt slid sideways and Knoettgen cen terpunch ed him. Knoe ttgen was up and off. rand got back in first within two laps . The mishap co st Witt a broken throttle, but he did manage to push his b ike ac ross the finish lin e fo r las t p lace poin ts for th at mota. llIai r came in second an d Burnett took th ird, giving Knocttgen overall fir st for the day. Open Sr. class was o nc e again won by Mik e Krebs on his 400 CZ , second was won by Ga ry Witt riding a Yamaha 250, thi rd to Shan Moore on a Maic o, (Re sult s on page 38) Motorcycles f# . .....
