in su pe r co nd it io n a nd exc eedingly fast

attend ing riders. C.l\I.C. Utah has
insta lled a new speaker sys te m which
can b e h eard a t a ny p oint o n t he tr ac k
a nd also put in a score bo ard which
sho ws th e resu lt s of th e p revio us races
and the order of th e upcoming races.
T he day's eve nts started w it h the
"Dash fo r Cash ", a h undred do llar bill
will go to the rider w ho posts t he fastest
lap time ove r a five w eek p eriod. Don
Fu ller set th e fas tes t t ime, I :54 .5 on
Mar ch 25 . Today th e firs t rid er, Fran k
Me ye rs (Ma i}, lower ed Fulle r's reco rd t o

Phil ~IcD onald (H us) put on o ne o f th e

par ts in a long tim e in th e 250 class.
Fuller, w ho always seems t o b e th e firs t
rid er off the sta rt ing lin e, gra b be d the

th ird b y a substantial m a rgin win when

McDonald then exch anged leads twice
with l\IcDonald coming out on t op.

Th e Op en Pro class was not t o be out
done as they o u td id everyone. fuller,
this time on his 3 6 0 Yamaha, put hi s
sk ill agai nst th at o f Packard (H us) . The
first moto saw Full er ge t o ne of his
patent start s with Pack ard o n ly in ches
sway. Fuller ca m e into a co rn er a little
heavy a nd dropp ed it with tw o rid er s
ge tt ing by . He q uick ly worked h is wa y
back up a nd regained th e lea d fo r th e
W In .
T h e second moto was a lm o st a
ca rbon co p y o f th e firs t but t his tim e
Full er laid it d own on t h e last lap and
Packard went o n to wi n.
The third mo t o Pack ard and Fuller
reall y char ged riding o n th at thin edge .
On the last lap they bo th went off the
co u rse togeth er in a turn, slam med into
the b ack of the so u nd trail er. wh ic h
resulted in the whole b ack o f the trailer
bein g pushed in, but neither riders nor
bikes were hurt .
After t empers subsided, Pac kard
jumped b ack on his Husk y and went o n
for the o vera ll wi n.
The three Plumb broth ers d omin at ed
th e 100 Pro class on th eir Hodak as,
Jerry Da vis (Ya m) and Bob Plumb had
quite a duel in the 125 's . Plumb's DKW
was sour so h e raced his 100 Hodak a
a nd had tw o seco nd s and a first b ut .

tr ack is a rough, d em anding co u rse laid
o u t o n th e site o f a n o ld gra vel p it. It
runs a t the edge 0 f a la ke in m a n y p laces
so th e rid er s have to b e on th eir t o es to
keep from taking a n unwanted bath.
This cou rse has deep, loose sa nd , a seri es
of st eep hills , a co up le of sweepi ng turns
and more loose, deep sand.
The 125 Junior class turned out t o b e
th e biggest fie ld o f th e d ay . T hey all
d ived in t o the first corner in a cl oud o f
dust with ea ch m an trying to co me o u t
of th at sand in th e n u mber o ne position.

the last one. T here aren't m an y
run-away wins any more. J o n Sell ers
ek ed o u t a very close win in th e Open
Expert he at. Butch Beard was tied t o
J o n 's rea r wh eel all five lap s and t ha t 's
th e way it en d ed with a new Ex pe rt
Dave Bat eman in third.
The 2 50 E xp ert class go t off t o it's
usu al sta rt with a c ras h in the hairpi n o n
th e firs t lap . Art Fredenburgh wen t
d own afte r h avin g the fron t wheel of hi s

Pat Klie n in the 125 Ex pert class and
held him off for the win. Mark is

Cl ive Frayling and Ken lIagland are

5 0 0 Amat eu r class w ith Cli ve in se co nd

roll ed aro u nd tension was reall y high.
Th e 250 Novices had · b een sent t o th e
pits. t o co o l d own from a few to many
fla se false st arts, and the Experts were
su ffe ri ng from the same problem . Again
th er e was the c ra sh in the first turn
foll o wed by the ambulance followed by
ano the r restart. This t ime Pat Klien was
scratched up but he d id manage to make
t h e rest a rt. During the main Jim Boat
h igh sid ed a nd w as h auled o ff to the
hospital. T o m Halford b lew the engine
in hi s Bu l. Butch Beard and Ma rlow
Parks were disqualifi ed for rid ing
different ma ch ine ry. It was just o ne o f
t hose ni ghts. Anyway Rick Kr aft wound
up on top with Byro n Boaz and Mat
Tipton in seco nd an d third .
The Open E xpert class had to b e o ne
o f t h e fin es t races eve r held at Man zy .
From th e start R ick Kraft a nd Jo n
Se llers were side b y side, nei th er rider
giving a n inch . Ric k se emed t o lea d
mo st o f th e race but it reall y is a to ss u p
as to wh o was in fr ont the most. The
cro wd was o n it's feet most o f the race
screaming like m ad . Rick won the race
but not b y m uch.
