By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., April 14, 1972 Novice Rick Hocking was well in control at the conclusion of the first short track of the season here. With 120 riders making up the program and a super fast track to boot, the action was absolutely superb. . The first qualifying heat looked like a National, and the regular heats and simi's went even faster as the track got better. Al Kenyon and Joe Henry, last week's Cow Palace winner, diced throughout the first 'q ualify ing heat and I made it worth the price of admission with beautiful close action slides through the comers. First off was Kenyon with Henry coming up to p ass aft er the th ird lap . From th at point, th e lead seemed t o ch an ge with every corne r. Taki ng th e checkered was H enry as Ken yon's motor seemed t o sour. T his w as t o spell doom for the kin g of t he short tra cks. He couldn't sta rt th e heat and was out for th e night. In th e fir st h eat , Jim Ri ce ro de his Sonny Ken y on tuned Astro t o a very co nvincin g win o ver Del Silva an d Mark Brelsford. Silva , a second year N ovice shines at this t rack and the two N ational rid ers co uld n't sh ade the Ossa mounted pil ot. Brelsfo rd was here as his fac tory road racers weren't read y, and h e p ut o n a gr ea t sho w up until the semi when h is moto r so ured and he had to pull o ut . Ho ck ing set fast ti me of th e ni ght in th e second h eat and showed wh y he wa s th e sho rt t rack ch am p h er e last -y ear with a w id e five second w in over Rock y Malynn. Pat Hennen rode a very smooth third heat on a new Danny Fodge/E.T. Cycle Ossa. These new frames and motors ar e fast becoming the rage for new racers to jump on and race. It's interesting to note that with all the frame manufacturers around the little independents' are fast. coming o u t of the . woodwork although Doug Schwerma (Owq>ion frames] sa ys that he is deluged with o rd ers. Fo r the semi 's it was Rice an eas y winner in one and Hocking the wi nner in the o th er. Sil va gave R ice competition. J oe Henry came up to try to give Hocking some trouble but co uld n 't quite get to him. The t h ree lap trophy dash was all Rice 's . Pat H en nen ' t ook th e start but Hocking an d Ri ce were righ t on his ta il. O n th e second lap it was Hocking with Henne n righ t o n his tail and R ice cl ose in fo r t hird .
