By the end of the first day , after 192 miles of very difficult conditions , less than 30 riders out of the 290 entered were still in the running. The machines were very beat up and everyone knew if they had to run the same course the following day with even higher river there were going to be no finishers. The layout crew was fra ntically switching arrows, and trying to help riders whose bikes were in the woods. Mike Vancil, the AMA 's resident peacock who had been running around in the mud all day in his shiny oxfords and sport j acket, was trying to p ersuade the club to include a tire-changing test, wa s n ow trying to persuad e somebod y to organize a searc h and rescu e mi ssion to ,- , lo o k for a guy who was stuck in th e woods. Fortunately Vancil failed on both missions. If he had managed to ge t his ti re changing test, somebody would probably have beat him to de ath w ith a muddy tire iron. The gu y h e wanted to rescue walked out under his own steam ' the following morning, which is more than c ould have been expected of an y rescue squad. The decision on Sunday's run was in the hands of the run's organizer Eddy Viermann, who had laid out the entire co urse o n a Honda 70 minibike. The Su nday run was scheduled to start at 6 a.m . It was delayed until 7 :00. Th e course by then had been re-marked to take out th e worst o f the water crossings, bu t one severe on e sti ll remained. The Sunday course wa s shortened to 56 miles.
