The wind was fierce all d ay and all night Saturday which m ad e camping pretty m u ch an inside thing. But by Sunday morning, there was just a breeze to blow the dust away from the 20 I starters. The course was two seperate 25 mile lo op s. Both very well marked and covering a wide variety o f desert riding, sand, washes, rocks, and the usual up and down hills. . The event was ad vertised as easy, and it was. There were 181 finishers - and first overall was John R . Hughes age 10 with , get this, a score of 998 points. Some o f the riders commented th at the speeds were too slow, top speed average was 20 mph, but all o f them said it was a lot of fun , an d th ey want t o do it again. With 20 0 entries co vering 5 0 mi les each , n o t co un tin g mil eage in th e pit s th er e was 10,000 miles covered without a single inj ury, not o ne , the ambulance just sat t here and gathered dust . Everybody , broken b ik es, check ers, an d clean up cr ews, were back in the pits b y 2 :30. An it em that caught the riders ey e was the use o f signs w arning of danger and road cro ssings.
