Triumph has now won all three Ex pe rt finals, all th ree trophy dashes an d two of the th ree J unio r finals. second R om ero , wh o fin ished ope ning nigh t, clo cked th e sec ond fastest time trial b efore taking th e heat race win over John Hateley, Lloyd Houchins and Keith Mashburn. Frank Gille spie topped Terry Dorsch , Terry Sage and Ri ck Deane and won hi s second straigh t heat race of th e seaso n . Moore edged Tom Rookie R on Rockwo od and Sh orty Seabourne. The previous week he fell off while leading. Gillespie wanted to win his second straight dash but pulled only third, be ating out Moore. . Romero jumped righ t into the lead at . th e start o f th e final with Aldana chasing. Tanner actually led th e first lap bu t dropped back just ahead of Aldana at the end of the fir st round. • Sammy dropped tw o spots on the fourth lap as Aldana and Gillespie both passed th e fo rme r Asc o t ace. By lap five, Rockwood, wh o had started n ear last o n th e first lap , h ad moved all the w ay up to sixth behind John Hateley. Hate ley and Rockwood both zapped Tanner on lap 7. Aldana's engine let go on the 12 th lap , putting Gill espie in a solid sec on d pl ace behind Romero. The race w as n ow for th ird between Hateley an d R ockw ood. The tw o ran together fo r th e las t three laps an d w ent to th e last tum of the last lap . There Rock wood put it low o n the groove an d squeez ed u nder for the third spot. Tanner held on to fi fth for his best finish this year. Mulder w as sixth with Mo ore in sev enth. T he Junio r class came up with its third different Main Event winner in Triumph-mounted Tom Ho rton. Horton was far back in time trials with Tim Wolf taking the quick honors. Horton, however, upset Scott Brelsford and Ron Powell to win his heat race. Triumph riders won four of the five Junior heats with th e fifth go ing to Iowa's Steve Droste on a Yamaha. The fo rmer ramp jumper is now starting to find his way around the fast oval and has given up j umping in favor of racing at Ascot weekly. Horton grabbed the lead in th e J unio r final but the race was stopped when Al Baker crashed for the second week in a row. At the re -start it was again Horton with Larry Gino righ t behind and ahead of Tim Thomas and Brelsford. Rex Barrett came on strong late in the race to pass Brelsford for third p lace but Gino was unable to pass Horton fo r th e win. Droste could not fin d the fa st way this time and en de d up fifth with Thomas drop ping back to sixth. The b ig bike Expert and Junio r classes appear to be wide open for winners from Friday to Friday bu t the Novice 250 clas s has settled d own to a two rider Yamah a duel between Joh n Gen nai from the Bay area and Montana's Scott Erickson. Both again won their heat races but had to ta ke a backseat to Rick Hocking on a Bultaco who clocked' the fastest five-l ap win. Danny Hockie, Ossa, was also a heat race winner and shot to the fron t in the lighweight final b u t was p assed by Erickson on lap three after ru nning third on the first lap. Gennai moved into second on lap five and then took over the fr on t p ositi o n on lap seven. Hocking was in , the hunt all of th e last four laps and b arely missed second place on the last lap but Erickson held on. Gennai now has w on two in a row, Erickson has two sec onds an d a firs t. This co ming Friday nigh t is the final tune-up for the annual Yamah a Gold Cu p half mi le a week from Friday nigh t. The May 5 event will p ay m ore th an $6,000 in the Exper t , Junior an d Novice class Main Eve n ts. ,; (Results on page 36)
