GARDENA, CAL., April 5, 1972 When an individual sits in the stands at Ascot, he sees t he racing o ne way w hile those in the in field see it another, an d a photo g lik e mys elf may see it yet another way. I fo und m y sel f in a mind-b reak ing, light flashing, blur of speeding mo tocrossers tonight. From places where I stood the sigh t and sound was overwhelming; scooters By Buzz in front of me , behind m e, and on both sides of me; gleaming bikes that seemed to leave trails of light fo r the next speeding rid er to b urs t into. As I would tum from lo oking at t he fro nt running fou rso me of Tim Hart ; Greg Smith , Mike Cram, an d Dave Sm ith in the 500 Expert motos, the multitude of Ascot lights, from all angles, would seem to travel with my eyes to the hurtling Baty machines behind me . Even walking over to the front straight, to watch Tim Hart take the flag, winning the first 500 mota, the dazzlin g lights would dance across his h elm et as h e did a giant wheelie the fu ll length of Ascot's front straight. Greg Smith, o verall winner for the 500 exp erts, would flash past the well-l it infield structures, and shafts of light would appear to pass through his body as if he we re impaled on them. Greg, asJast Sunday, brought his older Maico to the front over Mike Cram an d Dave Smith on their new Maicos. Honest, folks . It's a real ly wild scene to tum you r mind lo ose. Watch night racing as a whole, not just focus on one rider. (R esu lts on p age 39) the field like a AA fueler doing it to a VW. This time Mark was n't to be denied, but it was close. It had all of the thrills and sp ills associated with motocro ss rac ing, but that great shaggy-maned lion in the sky that looks after all these fellows made sure that all those that took a spill, or got tangled up with ano th er scooter, walk ed away under their own power, and without an y leaking sk in. T im Hart did some fancy ad di tio n that goes like so : On e plus one equals five ones, p lus o n e two , for a total of t wo ones. That translates to winning first ov erall in the 250 and 500 Expert classes, winning two ou t of three in the 250 matos, taking a second in the last 250 moto t o Dave Pessy 's Ossa , and win ning all three 500 Expert motos. Now any wa y you want to ad d t hat up , it comes out as o ne fine performance b y Tim and his Maicos, David Pessy got th at one first place in the last moto to go with two sec ond place finsihes for second overall, while Bryar Holcomb ra n th ird all nigh t lo ng with h is Ajay , or, you might say , three . p lus th ree eq uals three. When Chuck Bower an d his Mettco-sponsored Pen to n are right , which in the last few months h as b een about 90 per c en t of the time, there are not too dar n many 125 Experts that ca n b ea t Ch arlie. T on igh t was no exception; alt hough it was a short class tonight, Charlie d idn 't ease up in any wa y, and was p ressured only once, and t hat was in the last round as both Bultaco moun ted Ken Cook and Yamaha mounted · J oe Scotland took a run at Chuck , but came up short. Bower swept . TIm Hart and Dave Pessy played flinchies in the last moto . all three motos for th e first overall , Cook and Sco tland ending up second an d th ird resp ectfully . There's a little guy wh o rides Lio ns D ra g St rip every Friday night without fail. His nam e is Mark Marinez. Mark, wh o is' 11 years ol d, is one of the favo ri te s of the Lions grandstand crowd and anno unce r Bru ce Flanders. Mark alway s m akes th e last m o to. At Lio ns the last mo ta is a co mbine d affair, meaning that a certain number of riders fro m the first two motos transfer to the last mo ta. Now this mota is like a Main event, first man to the checker wins ; points from the first two rounds don't mean a thing. Well, tonight was Mark's n ight to play David to the field of giants.
