By Buzz Baty CARLSBAD, CAL., April 9 , 1972 J o n Derhammer rode two 20 mi nute mo to s today , w ithou t fuss o r .muss, and without mak in g an y m ent al b o o-boos. J on got a second in the first round a nd a first in the seco nd mota. That second 25 0 Expert m o ta see med more like a destructio n derby than m o t o cro ss ra cing; before they got thro ugh the first tum, riders w er e down, in back of Jon, in fro nt of h im. For a m omen t, it seemed like J on was the only u p righ t rider. G reg Parker did manage to push h is Husk y through th e first tum, we-all-fall-down-funsies ahead of J o n 's CZ , b u t so mewhere after th at las t lap flag an d b efore th e che cker Greg got off and J on took the ch ecker and fir st o vera ll, Meanwhil e, bac k in the pack, it was st ill fa ll-down t ime ! Gaylon Mosier went d own, got up a nd rode lik e the d evil was o n h is tail , earning enough poin ts fo r second overall, David Pess y an d Frank Mu noz tangled in the 180 d egr ee tum o pp os it e the scorin g st and. Bo th ended up on the ground, and before either o n e of them co uld ge t up, somebody , I still don 't know who, used both David's Ossa and Frank 's Montesa fo r a highway. H<: di dn't even say "May I?". David p icked up h is Os sa and got going again, b ut when Fran k p ick ed up his Mo ntesa, gas poured out of a hole about the size of a half d o llar in t he left side of the fib erg lass tank. Finis for Frank. Greg Park er, after falling on that last lap, managed to' finish and fill the show spot overall. T h e v<:ry warm day brought the birds o ut in flocks, and some weren't wearing ma n y fea th ers. Ah t h e j o ys of summer. Mark Dobbs is all the way back Calks. After last week at Saddleback, where he go t a second overall in th e 125 Expert class, Mark pushed his DKW in to first sp ot t oday. Marty Smith got his first ride as an Expert today and b e m ade it a good o ne, second o verall wit h h is 12 5 Penton. I wasn 't in a posi tio n to see it . but the people who were near the action, an d d id see it, say th at Ma rk Dobbs did a fa n tas t ic job o f layin g h is scooter d own to avo id hitting Leonard Mellgren when he dropped his CZ in front of Dob bs. Maybe though ts o f his own accident so me months ago w h en h e go t h it a ft er falling t riggered th e quick actions. (R es ults o n p age 3 9 ) ------- ....
