,... Some dust and O Large Waterhole ne By Bill Spencer PT . RICHMOND, CAL., March 19 , 1972 - While the big cats are away, the other guys will play and win, was the theme of today's ru n n in g of the Ric hmond Ramblers M.C . Hare Scrambles. The other guys were the likes of Rob Norgaard and Ricky Lewis. The big cats are normally Dick Mann and Brad Lackey but for today, they were both off somewhere else doi ng something else. F or th e reco rd , Lackey was winning Saddleback Park and Bugs was practicing at Carnegie Cycle Park. Something funny about those o ld guys that don't eve r take any ti me off for rest and frolic. At any rat e , th e big hike -run was an easy runaway for Norgaard on one of Lackey 's CZs and his keeping in shape for t he upcom ing racing scene will p ut him in the rig ht frame of m in d fo r th e lo n g raci ng run that w ill now last u n t il t he end of th e year. Norgaard came aro und well in the lead o n the first lap and held a steady th ree- min ute gap o n second p lace fin isher Jerry Parso ns on a BSA 500. Parso ns had a slig ht advantage on Steve Bales at the onset on t he b ack side of the mountain a nd had to settle for a third. Parsons kept u p good consistent laps to finish quit e well, while Norgaard kept his machine trucking for the win. In the 250 bash , young Ricky Lewis went hog wild riding one of his dad's AJSs, and had nearly an eight-minute lead on second place going in t o the last lap. Whil e still only a Junior-ranked rider, this youngster is quite at home on the Richmond h ills and his Ajay. Perhaps some of that Norton Villiers money has put some interest into this guy and if he ca n keep up this stuff, he . will definitely be in the payoff window in t he near future . Going by on t h e second to last lap, Lewis wanted to know how much mo re tim e. His dad told hi m o ne m o re lap but because he was cutting t he co urse in suc h quick tim e t hat when he came back h e got another "one m o re lap " signal. With a grin fro m ea r to ear . he plugged on fo r another lap . T he last one :g, '" Q. ,... Coming down one of the hills he pitched off and got some prett y good welts and cuts on h is side. His eight-minute advantage saved the day Stockton Hosts 306 at Lodi By A nn LODI , CAL., Mar ch 2 6, 1972 - The S tock to n Motorc ycl e Club pro vid ed 306 riders fro m California, Ne vada and O regon wit h a n extrem ely competitive p rogram today. T he track-dusty , ro ugh a nd wet in spots for practice-was swept clean via ro ad sweeper before the heats to p resent a tacky, d ustless , h ard su rface fo r the 62 eve nts to follow. Five hundred spectators enjoyed th e antics of 153 Juniors and E xpe rts who provided m o st of the excitement. Stockton Kawasaki rider Howard Arnaiz in his first race since breaking a thu mb ea rlier this year p u t out a fine in dividual performa nce. In t he 250 Expert Division John Carr Heeb o took the lead in lap th ree ove r James Monegan a nd w ent o n to gain 10 valuab le black p late points . Th is event also provided good battles between ' 'Th e Hughson flash",Jeff Davidson a nd b lack plate riders Dennis Spence a nd Mike Van Liend en . Jorgenson of Stockton A lex continued his d o mi nat ion of th e heavyweight Ex pert class wit h his fifth win in a row at valley tracks. Riding his dads " o ld " BSA (both cylinders operating today), A lex got off the line poorly in the heat but worked his way up to take a second behind Duane Spence on the last' la p. In the main, however, J o rgy pegged the starter perfectly and from then on it was Triumph chase BSA . The next day race at Lodi's Bowl will be the annual Spring Scrambles on April 16 .
