The com bi n ed Open affair was a total runaway for T rophy Cycle Maicos with Ron Huffman and Ron Self lit erally running away fro m all comers in b oth motos. Huffman has hit th e scene rather fast o f late and will j o in the pros j u st as soon as h e ca n get his license. The same goes for Self when h e is we ll but he isn't qui te the same in all-o u t speed. Huffman is a real b anzai, with style and wi th time migbt get to look a lot like Brad Lackey, who is now one of the real bad mo to cross dudes. Finishing a respectable fifth in the last moto was Ricky Lewis on the 250 AJS that is . keeping him in trophies lat cly. While the scoring was just o n t he Open basis, Ricky was seen passing a whole bunch of larger equipmen t wit h no difficulty. While his times we re n't, those of Bryar Holcomb, this kid deserves some wat ching, right Mike Jackson? Frazier has been a consistent entrant and just last week placed ninth to show his consistency. While John is not one of the ac t ive scramb les guys, he stills shows up once in a while to keep the troops honest . With Frazier came two other hot entries from the Los Gatos M.C. and between the three, they also managed to cop the Club trophy with finishes of first, fifth and eighth . The last trophy went to Louie Garcia who though t he was right behind Frazie r at th e end but a rech ec k of th e laps showe d him to be two lap s dow n. Garcia and J err y Ch adi m , the p resident of t he club as w ell as Frazier all rode the two ho urs by themselves and this really goes to show what kind of club these guys are. Besides being one of the hardest drinking clubs, th ey also go pretty fast. The second two-hour affair of th e day was the 125 class and Carl Rodrick sewed it up after R ick Hocking broke the primary chain on the Woodard Bultaco. Rick is about the fastest thing out t here but the Honda's of R od ric k and Bruce Hanlon managed to keep him in check until he finally went out. Rodrick and Hocking would dice fo r lap s on end an d swap th e lead like five t imes in one lap. Combine th is with Ha nlo n's su p erb effort and t he result is one-great race. Hanlon had his p ro blems toward the end but still managed to be credited with seventh place finish ing . Second to Rodrick was another Team Cycle Center entry of Longboya and Souza and they are alw ays in the thick of it, it seems. Newcomers Jay Scherer and Leonard Mc l ntre took a credible third despite a lo t of falling dow n ea rly in t he race, while the brothers, Alan and Fred Wood also had b ik e problems at the o nset but overcame t hem for a fourt h p lace. The 250 run once aga in went t o the Turner boys on a Selby Rickrnan-Montesa. These guys are the whiz kids of this track. One is a first year Novice while t he other has o nly been racing a few m o nt hs yet they really get it o n. T he seco nd spot went to lo ner J ohn Gennai w ho rode an 1\ & A Bult aco fo r the en tire d ist ance by hi mself desp ite a very st iff an d so re ankle. Ca rl Rod rick who had j us t gotten off a 125 Honda and was really h o t on his new 250 Maico came in third. That is really so mething. Four constant hours of on the gas can really keep you in shape. Fourth place would have gone to Dave Lewis on th e AJS but he teamed with Pat Brown and they got disqualified fo r riding two Experts, which is a no-no. Larry Darr also got the no-no sign for riding two motors with Terry Fish slipped in for a fourth, T he famed Marathon Madness w ill run once again on Saturday April 8, witb the Opens off first, then 125 's and 250's. , .
