R ay h as b een running his Triumph at Lions fo r some time and had b een running consistently under th e th en-existing nat ional record. Like many shop o wn er s, R ay uses his racy b ik es to prove his theories in actu al practice. Mast on is heading up budding Competition Cycle Ce nter. Ray has many lo cal records and has the NHRA mark at 11.03 and 12 5.5 0 mp h. Nice but rather faint co nsidering the co nsist en t 10.60's and better efforts many times since t he big meet. The Maston family, Ray 25, Cindy , his wife , and Michele 3, live in the city of Hawthorne. In racing for the last few years Ray has tried his share of various bike racing. An attemp t at IT racing made Ray very sore and brought a revelation , roundy-round racing wasn't for him ! The machine that put the Mastons name in the books, is as unusual as Ray himself. Both the bike and rider are easy to get along with . Neither take an ino rd in at e amount of work to get ready to race. The bike requires one cu p of o il and one quart of nitro ; the rider need s about one cup of something stronger. The engine has parts from so many different models , it's hard to believe. Most of those odd parts have come under Ray's scrutiny and alteration. About the only part John Q. Public can easil y obtain is the Joe Hunt magneto. What can y ou say abo ut such a motor except that it is tri ck. The wheelbase is 62 inc hes with a total ov erall length of 9 2 inches. The induction system is an altered Lake inj ector system th at puts the high doses of nitro-meth ane to a very thi rsty 40-incher . To run on the juice means th at yo u will usually h ave a high fa ilure rate. This bike has been very kind in this respect with o nly minor and occasional ne eds.
