Lap Money Sweetens Sprockets' Pot 25 cents? a. ii! « w Z ~ ~ U By Caro l Witt Photo by Karen Hartman WICHITA, KAN., March 5, 197:? Jim's Imports, the Yamaha dealer for this area, started a new trend out here by paying lap-money for the first place position at th e Sprocket's Motocross. Twenty-five cents (25¢) per lap should really sweeten the pot for the Expert classes. The 125 Senior and 125 Sportsman classes were run together with 20 riders in all . First off the line were Marvin Whitham (Yam), Wayne Lee (Yam) and Gary Van Sickle (Suz). These leaders passed the score box, but as they came out of the bowl to get the first lap flag . J im Malone (Pen) collided with Mike LeVall ey , causing h im t o ricochet into Marvin Whi th am . Malone w ent on but Wh it h am and Le Va lley fell. At this point , V an Sic k le h ad fir st, fo llo w ed closel y b y Malone and David Dixo n (Ya m) . Malone t ook over firs t in the fifth lap and carr ied it on h ome. Malone to ok th e first five laps o f th e second mota , o nly to los e it t o J on Thurston (Su z) for o ne lap, who th en dropped it to Whitham for th e last two laps, giving Whitham first. By th e third mota , Thurst on had had a taste o f riding in front of th e p ac k and to ok the first six laps beautifull y. Thurston ca n mo ve o n in th at sand, b u t had a lit tl e tro uble wi th th e b ack stret ch and spun o u t, leaving Wh ith am with a clear sh ot the re st o f the way in to home. This gave Wh itham firs t o vera ll for th e d ay. As th e rubber b and sn apped, Gary Witt shot o ut in the lead of th e 250 classes, leaving no d oubt as to what h e had on his mind. I hate repeating, but once again, Witt rode right on in to fir st p lace in all th ree motos on th at bright yello w 250 Yamaha Prototype. Ken McCleave from Ha ysville (CZ) , has been' having a few prob lems with h is mach ine , but today h e rode a beautiful ra ce and came in second. Today th e Open classes were all run at the same t ime , b u t scored separately. Nineteen riders w ere in thise event , making it very difficu lt fo r the riders in all classes . First o ff the line was Gary Witt. By the time th ey came around for Bill LeValley 1301 presses on. the first lap flag , Witt on his 360 Yamaha was still in the lead but Bill LeValley (Mai) had taken over second. Witt held th is sp o t t h rough the six t h lap and was going into th e 7 th, wh en h e hit a tire an d b en t a p ed al an d h ad to stop PUMFREY BULTACO Porting & Service available on all ma jor brands.
