fRIANT, PUCH GET OVERALL ATBUZZARDS ., ~ ::;; ~ w Z W ...J o >o By Bill and Dee Elam FOUR CO R NERS , CA L ., March 19 , 1972 - Hot pants , bikinis, and cold beer were the hot set-u p for the annual Buzzard's M.e. Flight. It was hot, but great racing weather. The Buzzards spent nine week working on the course, and it showed it. It was a rider's course and had a little of everything - uphills, d o w nh i l ls , sandwashes, motocross sections, rocks, fireroads, and fast and slow bush country. If you were go od at all typ es, you had fun and did well. There was the usual sn iveling, but if you want to rac e desert this was a go od example of it. If you can't hack it, go back and play-ride with the ladies. Bill Friant on his 175cc Puch showed he could hack it by placing first ov era ll. "I 'm ti red, I'll say t hat," he said afterward . Lar ry Pfu t zen reu ter placed second overall o n wh at must be a very determined 250 Bultaco. " I crashed once, and sto pped twice. It just wasn't HA R E SC RA MBLES Bu zzar d s M .C . The Lightweights, in fact , seemed to rule the day with only eight Heavyweights in the top 30 finishers. Some of the hot-shoe Heavyweights were notably absent, which may have accounted for this. First Heavyweight Expert was Bob Riley on a 400 Husky, who finished fourth overall . The next Heavyweight was Jay Jones o n a 400 Husky a relatively distant seventh overall . Tom Poteet ap pears to be coming back in earnest. He seized his 250 Bultaco just short of th e finish line, took his plate off, and ran across the finish line eighth overall. T here is a lo t of us t hat want yo u back, Tom, so get it on! . Dean Da ily and Roger Sanderson, first a nd second trailbikes, are o nly Amateurs.
